Elon showing Jay Leno the first production unit Tesla Roadster in 2008. Leno amazed by battery pack with 6,831 lithium-ion cells and gives this take on his first test drive: “The good thing with electricity is that you get full torque from 0 RPM. In a gas car, you have to bring the revs to 3 or 4 grand and pop the clutch. Most electric cars feel bottom heavy, but not this. It’s eerily quiet. It’s amazing. All you hear is the wind noise. I like that it’s a sports car, not some dorky little 4-door econo-box.” *** Full ep:

Tesla VP of Hardware Engineering Lars Moravy explains to Hagerty how the Roadster borrows SpaceX cold gas thrusters to make 0 to 60 possible in 0.55 seconds. Truly insane: ▫️ 200L carbon-over wrapped pressure vessel behind seat holds nitrogen at 10,000 PSI ▫️cold gas thrusters push out 80 kN of thrust (equivalent to a single fighter jet engine) ▫️Tesla went with nitrogen because “it just seemed wrong to put fuel into a car” (air is ~80% nitrogen, fair enough) ▫️thrusters same system satellites use to move in space (eg. the “psh psh psh" from Apollo 13 film) ▫️currently takes 6 to 7 hours to refill all nitrogen but Tesla working for it to be 30 minutes ▫️uses leg actuators from Optimus robot to manage downforce on wing *** Full 25-min episode with Henry Catchpole here:

Really enjoyed You Can See Everything. Might be most meta documentary ever. No spoilers but will say this interview Christopher Nolan did with Nathan Fielder about his show “The Curse” — explaining his creative process — really comes through in Holmes film: ▫️setting the tone is his top priority, even moreso than narrative (“when you have the tone right, everything falls into place”) ▫️Fielder says he “stumbles into ideas he gets excited about” without a master plan and “just piles things on and it grows” (for the Holmes doc, he had an agreement with A24 to scrap the project even after years of shooting if he didn’t think there was a film) ▫️the musical score is crucial in setting the tone (the sound doesn’t even have to match action on the scene, it can float above just setting mood) ▫️he doesn’t want to rush scenes; let them develop to the point where audience is expecting any action to be consequential and it builds the tension (inspired by old detective TV show Columbo) *** Full interview here (Nolan really is a Fielder Stan):

Jensen masterfully handles the potential Benioff frame-mog: “Look, I'm very good friends with both of you guys…I always feel like I need to stand on a chair…I just wanna let you guys know that when I'm on an airplane, I'm a lot more comfortable than you guys. And so, through human evolution, they realized that big is unnecessary. There's about a million years of evolution between you and me."

James Dyson still owns 100% of Dyson, which does annual sales of ~$9B. His mentor Jeremy Fry gave initial seed capital in 1979 and owned 49% of Dyson up to early-1990s. Dyson told David Senra he bought out Fry for £45k. They remained friends after (Fry left because they were in a lawsuit with another company and he didn’t want to deal with it). Also, it did take Dyson 5,127 prototypes and years before his breakthrough. The company is probably worth $20-30B and he owns 100%. Wild. *** Full interview with David Senra here:

The teaser trailer for Michael Mann’s reboot “Miami Vice” film in 2006 was an incredible vibe. You had to watch it on Baccardi Rum’s website. “Numb/Encore” by Jay-Z and Linkin Park perfectly synced to action. Colin Farrell’s slicked back hair and insane moustache. Had it all.

Enhanced Games athlete in photo is James “The Missile” Magnussen. Australian swimmer with an Olympic silver medal. Said he’d “juice to the gills” if offered $1m to break 50m freestyle record of 20.88. Enhanced Games agreed. This vid of him is most viewed on its YouTube channel and top comment is incredible: “you can see his back from his front”. Absolute tank. 6’6 and will weigh ~250lbs for the swim. For the inaugural Enhanced Games this weekend, Magnussen will also wear a full-body polyurethane super swimming suit that was banned after 2008 Beijing Olympics (he’s been training and doping at a facility in LV).

The biggest cheese banks in Italy store 300,000+ wheels of Parmesan. Dairy farmers use cheese as collateral and get loans up to 80% of market value. At ~$1,000 per wheel, that’s $200m+ in loans (banks seize and sell cheese if farmer can’t pay back). Best part: banks use automated machines that brush and turn the cheese wheels everyday to keep them fresh. *** Vid link:

Wild story. Chinese mom (in her 60s) and son (30s) duo spend 5 years making 86-minute animated animal film “Niu Lai”. Budget of $200. Hustle to get theatre distribution. Flops with $1,000 in first week. So bad it’s good. Goes viral. Now made $4m on $200 and 20,000x return easily tops Paranomal Activity ($193m/$15k = 12,890x) and Blair Witch Project ($248m/$60k=4,133x) for most profitable film box office haul against original production budget ever.
