Russia is weakening, and Putin needs to buy time. That’s why Moscow wants Europe cast as a “neutral mediator,” which is impossible. Europe supports Ukraine and its own security. The focus must stay on increasing pressure on Russia until it is serious about peace negotiations.

Russian fighter jets were warned as they neared Estonian and NATO airspace. Despite the warnings, they crossed the border and remained for 12 minutes. By doing so, Russia — a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council — blatantly and recklessly violated Estonia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the UN Charter and international law.

For Estonia, freedom came not in 1945, but in 1991. Today marks the end of World War II in Europe. We honor the millions who sacrificed their lives to defeat Nazism and remember the immense suffering caused by both totalitarian regimes that devastated the continent. But for Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and much of Eastern Europe, May 1945 did not bring freedom. It marked the continuation of Soviet occupation, repression, deportations, censorship, and the destruction of national sovereignty for decades to come. Remembering history truthfully is not revisionism. Erasing occupation and calling it liberation is. Today, the Kremlin continues to weaponize WWII history to justify imperialism and aggression, especially against Ukraine, while ignoring the crimes committed under Soviet occupation.

In 2016–2017, we saw 120,000 Russian troops ready to go on the other side of the Estonian border. Today, those troops are gone — literally dead in Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting instead of us & NATO would be stronger with Ukraine as its member. #NATOsummit #WeAreNATO

For decades, there has been extensive dialogue with Russia, yet each round has been followed by greater aggression rather than restraint. It began with the war against Georgia in 2008, after which came extensive debate and engagement. In 2014, Crimea was occupied, again followed by a great deal of talking and attempts at dialogue. In 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion, while continuing to issue demands toward NATO Allies and the broader European security architecture. The pattern is clear: dialogue has not changed Russia’s aggression. What is needed now is sustained support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia.

Just last week, Russia launched more than 2,000 drones, missiles, and guided aerial bombs against Ukraine, showing what it thinks of peace. A reparation loan using Russia’s frozen assets would give Ukraine a stronger hand against Russian aggression and put Europe at the negotiating table. Together with a 20th sanctions package and tariffs on Russian and Belarusian goods, we can change the course of the war and force Russia to stop.

The most steadfast supporters of Ukraine, the Nordic-Baltic group, remain committed to a two-point peace plan: unwavering support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia. As we met our Ukrainian colleague Andrii Sybiha 🇺🇦, we emphasized that Russia, the sole and absolute obstacle to peace, must be pressed to reconsider its course and bring an end to its aggression. Until Russia abandons its maximalist demands and stops speaking the language of drones and missiles, we will continue increasing the price. #MSC2026

Today we celebrate the birthday of our freedom - our own, cherished and protected. A day when we feel pride in living in a free Estonia, speaking our language, and making our own choices. Yet on this same date, we also remember a different morning. Four years ago, Ukraine awoke to war. It is a painful reminder that freedom does not endure on its own. It must be defended. It must be protected. Freedom means the ability to believe in the future and to live without fear. Today, Ukraine is fighting for that very right. Estonia knows from its own history what it means to lose freedom and what it means to restore it. That is why 24 February is not only a day of celebration. It is also a responsibility. To stand by our country. To stand by one another. To stand for freedom. Long live Estonia! 💙🖤🤍

This year, #Estonia 🇪🇪 made a huge leap towards a more inclusive society by legalising gender neutral marriage. Still, much needs to be done. On this #IDAHOT we raise the rainbow flag 🏳️🌈 & confirm our commitment to ensuring everyone can live free from fear & violence.

My message to BBC News (UK) was clear: nothing about Europe without Europe. We will ensure the aggressor pays and that pressure continues to intensify. Russia has not changed its objectives. The proposed peace plan fails to pressure the aggressor and instead restrains Ukraine, the victim of this brutal invasion. A peace is only just when it is grounded in international law, including the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.
