I realize there's hundreds of posts on this so I'm essentially preaching to the choir, but I don't know how any of us look at this clip and can't just realize we were so robbed of something that was going to be great however long it lasted.

One of Topuria's favorite tricks is to mixup his step-in body jab, and step in straight to the body (esp. to dip under their lead hand) as he makes his opponent backstep. Framing w/ his lead hand let Gaethje set up an uppercut by making Topuria think it's a jab to step in on.

Postfight comments for Topuria are actually a bit minimal on my side. First is that he continued to show that while opponents should kick him and weaponize them for space, it's not incredibly free and hard to follow up the front kick without him trying to take that space back.

One of Pantoja's tricks as fights go into later rounds is to jab against active aggression and to get breathing space. More clever applications see him convert to frames, left hooks or clinch attacks. It's very plausible to see him try and counterjab Van if things go longer.

To deal with Gaethje's jab, Holloway stood right at the edge of the pocket, messing with Gaethje's expectations as to when he would counter or commit, or if he'd step in or out. This allowed him to stay at a range the jab wouldn't land and constantly step-in to threaten it.

Thread: The reason Gaethje's jab was so effective? B/c he made a targeted effort to prevent Topuria from feinting or disguising his step-ins. Gaethje's jab wasn't just effective because it was active. The volume and deliberate timing as Topuria stepped in - feint or not - helped.

One trick Volkanovski used vs Lopes was doubling up on a chopping overhand right. Why it was effective: 1) It takes advantage of Lopes' limitations in exchanges by smothering him. And this has all to do with the trajectory of the right allowing Volk to dip his head under Lopes'.

One of the key jabbing applications Gaethje used to best Topuria was posting behind the dipping jab. Doing so let him avoid one of Topuria's favorite jab counters while letting him set up transitional attacks.
