Yesterday the UKSLA, SSE and the SLDUK came together to celebrate the 66th anniversary of Somaliland’s independence (26th June 1960) in the heart of Birmingham at the historic Council House. There could hardly be a more fitting place to commemorate this historic occasion. Birmingham Council is the largest city council in Europe and is home to one of the largest Somaliland communities in the United Kingdom.

Yesterday, Somalilanders took over the Square and painted it green, white and red. We want to say a huge thank you to the thousands who came out yesterday to represent the beautiful country of Somaliland. We should all be proud of ourselves for taking over one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks. Somalilanders from all over the UK turned central London into a display of Somaliland’s greatness!!!! The sense of community was genuinely heartwarming, with people of all ages celebrating and showcasing our unity, honour, and culture. We also thank Sir Sir Gavin Williamson CBE MP MP, for attending the rally and for his longstanding and determined advocacy for Somaliland. Sir Gavin has consistently fought to raise Somaliland’s case in Parliament, and his continued support for re-recognition is deeply valued by all British Somalilanders.
