#Freedom250 Signers of the Declaration of Independence: William Paca (1740-1799) A respected lawyer, jurist, and public servant, William Paca was known for his quiet, razor-sharp logic and strategy—and his impact on Maryland politics before, during, and after the War for Independence. During the war, Paca served on Congress’ newly created Court of Appeals. In 1782, he became Governor and he was an early advocate of supporting veterans returning from war. In 1786, as a Maryland House Delegate, Paca became a leader of the Antifederalist movement. His primary objections to the Constitution– that there were inadequate safeguards for freedom of religion, press, and legal protection for those accused of crimes – were later incorporated into the Bill of Rights.

Last year, the U.S. Mission China issued a call to all American members across the mission, inviting those whose relatives or ancestors served in China or the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater during World War II to share their family stories. Among the responses, one email in particular caught our attention. A diplomat sent a link to a cloud drive containing four videos, which, she said, were filmed by her grandfather during his World War II service in China. According to the diplomat, her grandfather, Eugene Thomas Maruszewski, served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and later worked for NASA. He passed away in 1999, having rarely spoken of his wartime experiences. It wasn't until 22 years after his death, in 2021, that the diplomat’s aunt, Camilla Olson, discovered a box of 8mm film reels. Her husband, David Olson, digitized the reels, bringing these valuable images to light. We have concluded that the video footage was taken between March and November 1943, documenting missions and daily life of the 308th Bombardment Group—particularly the 374th Squadron—under the 14th U.S. Army Air Force stationed in China. The films also feature street scenes in Kunming and Chengdu, along with everyday life of Chinese people. We interviewed Cate Olson, the granddaughter of Eugene Thomas Maruszewski and daughter of Camilla Olson, asking her to share the story behind the precious footage and her memories of her grandfather. In July 2025, led by Mr. Gan Yun, Executive Vice President of Flying Tigers Research Institute of Yunnan, we drove to the site of the Flying Tigers’ barracks near Chengkung Airfield, Kunming — buildings that appeared many times in the color footage shot more than 80 years ago. #80thAnniversaryOfWWIIVictory #WWIIChinaInColorRediscovered

In the spring of 1942, after the Burma Road was severed, China and the United States launched an aerial supply route over the Himalayas — the famous “Hump.” From then until the end of World War II in August 1945, this route served as the main lifeline for supplies entering China. The Hump flights were initially assigned to the U.S. Army Air Forces’ Tenth Air Force, and later to its Air Transport Command (ATC). The China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) also undertook a significant share of the flights. Besides the ATC, other U.S. air units stationed in China also frequently flew over the Hump. For example, the 308th Bomb Group of the 14th Air Force — featured in the newly discovered rare color footage of wartime China — primarily carried out missions to support Chinese ground forces by striking enemy targets from the air. In addition to combat missions, the 308th Bomb Group played a crucial role in maintaining Allied supply lines. After its formation, the group’s very first task was to shuttle supplies over the Hump. Because all supplies had to be flown over the Hump, approximately three Hump flights were necessary for every combat mission. #80thAnniversaryOfWWIIVictory #WWIIChinaInColorRediscovered
