#Freedom250 Signers of the Declaration of Independence: George Walton (1741-1804) George Walton was born in Virginia and orphaned as a young child. Raised by an uncle with thirteen children, Walton taught himself by firelight at night while apprenticing as a carpenter. In 1769, he moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he studied law and joined the bar in 1774. In 1783, Walton became Chief Justice of Georgia, later serving another term as Governor in 1789, during which he helped adopt a new state constitution. Though invited to attend the Federal Constitutional Convention in 1787, he declined. He later served as a state superior court justice and briefly served in the U.S. Senate.

#Freedom250 Signers of the Declaration of Independence: Matthew Thornton (1714-1803) Matthew Thornton was born in Ireland in 1714 and moved to what would become Maine as a child. In September 1776, Thornton was appointed a delegate to the Continental Congress. Officially seated on November 4, he became one of the last signers of the Declaration of Independence. Though late, he insisted on being added to the list, wanting the “same privilege as the others… to be hanged for his patriotism.”

Last year, the U.S. Mission China issued a call to all American members across the mission, inviting those whose relatives or ancestors served in China or the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater during World War II to share their family stories. Among the responses, one email in particular caught our attention. A diplomat sent a link to a cloud drive containing four videos, which, she said, were filmed by her grandfather during his World War II service in China. According to the diplomat, her grandfather, Eugene Thomas Maruszewski, served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and later worked for NASA. He passed away in 1999, having rarely spoken of his wartime experiences. It wasn't until 22 years after his death, in 2021, that the diplomat’s aunt, Camilla Olson, discovered a box of 8mm film reels. Her husband, David Olson, digitized the reels, bringing these valuable images to light. We have concluded that the video footage was taken between March and November 1943, documenting missions and daily life of the 308th Bombardment Group—particularly the 374th Squadron—under the 14th U.S. Army Air Force stationed in China. The films also feature street scenes in Kunming and Chengdu, along with everyday life of Chinese people. We interviewed Cate Olson, the granddaughter of Eugene Thomas Maruszewski and daughter of Camilla Olson, asking her to share the story behind the precious footage and her memories of her grandfather. In July 2025, led by Mr. Gan Yun, Executive Vice President of Flying Tigers Research Institute of Yunnan, we drove to the site of the Flying Tigers’ barracks near Chengkung Airfield, Kunming — buildings that appeared many times in the color footage shot more than 80 years ago. #80thAnniversaryOfWWIIVictory #WWIIChinaInColorRediscovered

In the spring of 1942, after the Burma Road was severed, China and the United States launched an aerial supply route over the Himalayas — the famous “Hump.” From then until the end of World War II in August 1945, this route served as the main lifeline for supplies entering China. The Hump flights were initially assigned to the U.S. Army Air Forces’ Tenth Air Force, and later to its Air Transport Command (ATC). The China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) also undertook a significant share of the flights. Besides the ATC, other U.S. air units stationed in China also frequently flew over the Hump. For example, the 308th Bomb Group of the 14th Air Force — featured in the newly discovered rare color footage of wartime China — primarily carried out missions to support Chinese ground forces by striking enemy targets from the air. In addition to combat missions, the 308th Bomb Group played a crucial role in maintaining Allied supply lines. After its formation, the group’s very first task was to shuttle supplies over the Hump. Because all supplies had to be flown over the Hump, approximately three Hump flights were necessary for every combat mission. #80thAnniversaryOfWWIIVictory #WWIIChinaInColorRediscovered

During World War II in China, “Ding Hao” (meaning “the best”) was a common greeting between the Flying Tigers and the Chinese people, and it was even included in an American dictionary for a time. In this video, Jim Fields Jim Fields, an American filmmaker and Flying Tigers researcher living in Yunnan, together with WWII historian Ge Shuyu, explains the origin of this term. On August 1, 1941, the American Volunteer Group (AVG) was officially formed, with its headquarters in Kunming and Claire Chennault as its commander. The AVG later became the famed Flying Tigers. On December 20, 1941, shortly after arriving in China, the Flying Tigers faced their first aerial battle. In this video, Flying Tigers researcher and filmmaker Jim Fields Jim Fields recounts this air combat. #80thAnniversaryOfWWIIVictory #WWIIChinaInColorRediscovered
