On National Purple Heart Day, we solemnly honor the courage and sacrifice of every Soldier wounded or killed in combat. The Purple Heart bears the profile of General George Washington, who established its precursor—the Badge of Military Merit—in 1782. Revived in 1932, General Douglas MacArthur received the first modern Purple Heart. We remember their valor and enduring service.
