Winter comeback in Europe? 🧐Across much of Europe, a prolonged period of below-average temperatures will begin on Wednesday. 🥶 This is likely to last until Easter. The video shows the development of temperature anomalies from Wednesday one week ahead. At the same time, there will be plenty of precipitation, so higher elevations will see significant snowfall. ❄️ Much of Europe is heading for a cold transition from March to April and likely also a chilly Easter.

A significant stratospheric warming will occur in the coming days, which will substantially weaken the polar vortex (the video shows its development over the next 14 days). 🧐 It will split into two smaller cells, one of which will gradually dissipate. Such a weak polar vortex may allow further pronounced intrusions of Arctic air into the mid-latitudes during February. 🥶

A mass of Arctic air will become trapped over eastern Europe. 🥶 In #Ukraine, #Belarus, and western #Russia, temperatures will regularly drop to around −20 °C over the next at least 14 days, while daytime highs will be only around −10 °C (watch the temperature outlook for the next 14 days): 🧐 These are below-average temperatures which, according to current forecasts, could persist throughout the entire month of January.

Most of Europe under snow? ❄️☃️The ECMWF model expects snow cover to expand across most of the continent over the next 14 days: The largest increase in snow is forecast toward the end of the model run, so the outlook may still be refined. However, the onset of true winter in Europe appears certain.

Below-average temperatures will persist in Eastern Europe. 🧐 In addition, a strong cold front on Sunday will push temperatures even further below normal, making them significantly below average in some places (see the temperature anomaly for the next 7 days): Snowfall will also return to the mountains, while in Russia it will snow even at lower elevations. ❄️⛷️In Western Europe, on the other hand, temperatures will be near or above average.

In the stratosphere at an altitude of around 30 km, the polar #vortex is partly distorted and split into two lobes. 🧐 Over the next 14 days, its lack of compactness is expected to prevail, as indicated by model forecasts. Such a state of the polar vortex allows cold Arctic air to penetrate into lower latitudes in some regions. This is currently affecting Europe, while warm weather prevails in America.

Brisbane (Australia) is expected to be directly hit by a tropical cyclone #Alfred 🙏🧐 The storm will slow down significantly before making landfall, thus resulting in extremely heavy rainfall along the coast. ICON models predict over 500 mm of precipitation in some areas by the end of the week. Flooding is expected. The video shows the progress of the storm over the next 3 days:

Eastern Europe is set to experience the strongest cold spell of this winter so far, especially in Ukraine and Belarus. 🥶🧐 Temperatures will drop below −25 °C around the turn of the week, which is 10 to 20 °C lower than is typical for the region: However, the mass of Arctic air will not spread much farther into Europe and will stall over Eastern Europe. The temperature evolution over the next five days is shown in the video below.

In recent days, cold air has begun to flow into Central and Western Europe. In the coming days, the influx of cold air into Europe will intensify further. 🧐 🥶 At the beginning of the new year, most of Europe will experience below-average temperatures, with all-day frosts in many areas. The video shows the development of the temperature anomaly in Europe over the next 12 days, up to January 6:

The Atlantic will be very windy over the next three days. 🧐🌬️One windstorm is currently affecting Scotland and will move over Norway. Another, significantly stronger storm will develop tomorrow over the Atlantic and hit Iceland at the beginning of the week. Wind gusts will exceed 100 km/h:

An extremely dangerous typhoon #Ragasa is now heading across the ocean between the Philippines and Taiwan, where it will strengthen to the highest Category 5 level. 🧐 It will then move toward densely populated areas in southern China, where it is expected to make landfall and could cause widespread damage. ⚠️ See it live:

Major Hurricane #Humberto has reached Category 5 today! ⚠️ Off the coast of Florida, the future Hurricane #Imelda is now forming. However, the powerful Hurricane Humberto is expected to alter its path and deflect it over the Atlantic, so it is still not anticipated to reach the shoreline. 🙏 This rather unique development is captured in the wind animation for the next four days:

Alaska is experiencing one of the coldest winters since 1918. 🥶 In the city of Fairbanks, temperatures regularly stayed below −19 °C (−2 °F) from December 13 to January 16 (see video) and remained consistently below average. 🧐 It was only yesterday that temperatures finally rose: This is the longest continuous period with temperatures below −19 °C recorded in the city since 1918.

For the first time this winter, the polar vortex is expected to break up. 🧐 Although it is currently strong, it will begin to weaken over the next seven days and split into several smaller vortices by mid-February. This process could bring below-average temperatures to Europe in the second half of February. 🤗
