Tragic news from Sierra Leone: two girls have lost their lives, seven are currently trapped, half a dozen women are in jail, and two families are grieving. Salamatu Jalloh, 13 and Kadiatu Bangura, 17 have tragically lost their lives due to complications after undergoing bondo initiation—a practice that includes the partial or complete removal of the clitoral hood. No parent sends their child to the bondo cutter out of hatred or a desire for them to die, but the practice of bondo is deadly. How many more lives of girls and women must be shattered due to the failure of Sierra Leonean lawmakers to abolish female genital cutting? This TV news report is brought to you by #VickieRemoePrize grantee Marian Marian Amaria Bangura reporting from Kambia District in Northern Sierra Leone. FGM survivor activists Sarian Karim-Kamara Alimatu Dimonekene MBE Rugiatu Neneh Turay and countless others have told us the damage and lifelong trauma of bondo initiation but their voices continue to fall on deaf ears. Sarian and Neneh through their respective orgs Lose The Knife Keep The Drum, and Amazonian Initiative have shown that it is possible for girls to go through a bloodless rite of passage, no cutting, no trauma, no death. Lawmakers will tell you that there is a law in #SierraLeone that protects children, that you have to be 18. There isn’t. Clips from the documentary on Mayor Yvonne by the BBC. First clip she thinks she is going to be arrested. She doesn’t. Next clip she goes live to tell the world the streets are red with blood. They weren’t. Next clip is her deleting the video and saying that people were focused on her live cause they wanted to distract away from the fact that one person died. Sierra Leonean food is the best in the world! No to me say, na National Geographic! National GeographicTravel says in all of West Africa, only one restaurant made it on their list of 21 best restaurants in the world for 2024. That restaurant is in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and it is Cole Street Guest House. I had the pleasure of dining at Cole Street twice in the past month, once for dinner and another for brunch. I had intended to go a third time, but as is often the case with the best of the best, Cole Street was fully booked for private dining.
