Tragic news from Sierra Leone: two girls have lost their lives, seven are currently trapped, half a dozen women are in jail, and two families are grieving. Salamatu Jalloh, 13 and Kadiatu Bangura, 17 have tragically lost their lives due to complications after undergoing bondo initiation—a practice that includes the partial or complete removal of the clitoral hood. No parent sends their child to the bondo cutter out of hatred or a desire for them to die, but the practice of bondo is deadly. How many more lives of girls and women must be shattered due to the failure of Sierra Leonean lawmakers to abolish female genital cutting? This TV news report is brought to you by #VickieRemoePrize grantee Marian Marian Amaria Bangura reporting from Kambia District in Northern Sierra Leone. FGM survivor activists Sarian Karim-Kamara Alimatu Dimonekene MBE Rugiatu Neneh Turay and countless others have told us the damage and lifelong trauma of bondo initiation but their voices continue to fall on deaf ears. Sarian and Neneh through their respective orgs Lose The Knife Keep The Drum, and Amazonian Initiative have shown that it is possible for girls to go through a bloodless rite of passage, no cutting, no trauma, no death. Lawmakers will tell you that there is a law in #SierraLeone that protects children, that you have to be 18. There isn’t. Over 80% of women in SL have gone through Bondo and given these recent events, the practice of cutting girls isn’t going away anytime soon. Watch the 8 mins report here: #endfgm

Konk is the krio word for clitoris and hundreds of Sierra Leonean women online are coming out to thank their parents for not cutting thiers. THAT is what I'm celebrating right now! Sexually active Sierra Leonean women celebrating sexual pleasure. The flip side of growing up in a society where tradition says womanhood is reserved for the cut only, uncircumcised women are deemed as “borka”—unclean, inadequate and not women enough. 83% of girls and women (15 - 45) in Sierra Leone have had part or all of their clitoris removed as a rite of passage to womanhood and membership to the Bondo Society (2019 - Demographic Health Survey). Bondo is not the problem its what happens there that is. Thousands of women who have been to Bondo say the cutting left them mutilated. Girls and women die each year from Bondo complications both in the bush and during childbirth when the clit which supports the opening of the birth canal can't because it has been cut. While government plays politics with girls and women’s lives because you can go meet cutters (soweis) to lobby for their votes; a growing number of Sierra Leonean parents are choosing to safeguard their daughters. And that means protecting them from bondo. I come from a long line of Bondo women. Every woman in my maternal line was circumcised. Our family land in Makeni, had a Bondo Bush in the back. My great grandmother, my grandmother, my mother, all the aunties and cousins, each one cut when they were initiated. My mother saved me. For others it's their dad or grandmother. Until the laws eventually catch up and protect girls from the cutting, it is up to parents, we papa en we mama dem for protect we! So yeah #tenkimama #tenkipapa you no put me Bondo. Proudly Konk Family and our motto is simple—come one, come all. #endfgm 😁
