Milton Friedman: “The problem with government is the absence of any mechanism for recognizing errors. What the private system abounds in is survival of the fittest.” “What the governmental system abounds in is expansion of the mistakes. There is no mechanism for eliminating governmental agencies which are no longer needed or have behaved perversely.”

Hayek on why politicians love Keynesian economics: “Politicians love the argument that if you outspend your income and run a deficit, you’re doing good to the people in general.” “They don’t want to hear anything more than to be told that irresponsible spending is beneficial.”

Hayek on why he didn’t critique Keynes’s General Theory when it was first published: “I spent a lot of time criticizing his Treatise on Money, which came out before the General Theory, in two long journal articles. But when I published the second one, Keynes told me, ‘Oh, never mind, I no longer believe that.’ So when he came out with his General Theory, I thought I was not going to waste my time criticizing. But that book was the one which became so frightfully important. I regretted for the rest of my life that I did not return to the charge then.”

Hayek was asked to leave “a statement for the future generations.” His response is brilliant: “Modern civilization which enables us to maintain 4 billion people was made possible by the institution of private property. It is only thanks to this institution that we achieved an extensive order far exceeding anybody’s knowledge.” “If you destroy that moral basis, which consists in the recognition of private property, we will destroy the sources which nourish present-day mankind, and create a catastrophe of starvation beyond anything mankind has yet experienced.”

Hayek on what true scientists understand that most intellectuals don’t: “The man who has learned a little science lacks the humility the real scientist gladly acquires. The typical intellectual believes everything must be explainable, but a scientist knows that a great many things are not. A good scientist is essentially a humble person.”

Friedrich Hayek on the illusion of “given data”: “Data are fictitiously assumed to be given to the explaining theorists.” “But the data are not really given to them or anyone else. Data are widely dispersed knowledge of millions of people, which can in no way be unified.”
