Political prisoners released from authoritarian regimes often face the struggle of rebuilding their lives while lacking access to basic needs, security, healthcare, employment, and community support. Recovery and reintegration are essential parts of the path toward lasting freedom and dignity. Through online support sessions and community networks, the WLC Political Prisoners Support Team (PPST) helps accompany those who have been liberated on their path toward recovery and dignity. The After Liberation handbook is available for free on the WLC website.

Meet Nilofar Ayoubi 🇦🇫 - an Afghan women’s and human rights defender, entrepreneur, and advocate against gender apartheid. After disguising herself as a boy to access education under Taliban rule, she went on to found multiple businesses in Afghanistan, creating jobs for hundreds of women. Forced to flee in 2021. She served as Regional Secretary for the Middle East and North Africa at the World Liberty Congress for 2023-2025, and was elected as WLC Leadership Council at the WLC General Assembly in Berlin. She also supports refugee aid initiatives across Europe and the United States.

Meet Carine Kanimba. She is a Rwandan global human rights advocate and WLC Secretary General, leading efforts to confront authoritarianism and defend political prisoners worldwide. She spearheaded the #FreeRusesabagina campaign, securing the 2023 release of her father, Paul Rusesabagina, and has since become a powerful voice for accountability and justice. A recipient of the 2023 Magnitsky Award, Carine has testified before the U.S. Congress and European Parliament, and continues to mobilize international action through her work at the World Liberty Congress.

Meet Alfredo Jimeno R. — a Venezuelan lawyer, human rights defender, and former Chacao City Council Member with more than two decades of experience in public administration and democratic reform. Forced into exile in 2020, he has continued his fight for freedom, justice, and the rule of law from Spain. A founding member of Voluntad Popular and former WLC Regional Secretary for the Americas (2023–2025), Alfredo has become a leading advocate for political prisoners and victims of authoritarian repression across Latin America. He also led the WLC “Faces of Torture” exhibit in Madrid and was elected to the WLC Leadership Council for the 2025–2027 term.

After two days of intense debate, courageous resolutions, and the historic adoption of the Berlin Manifesto, we close this General Assembly united in our shared purpose: to strengthen and expand the global struggle against dictatorships in all their forms. We also entrust this mission to a renewed leadership, electing: -Felix Maradiaga as President (Félix Maradiaga) -Shukria Barakzai as Vice President (Shukria Barakzai) -Carine Kanimba as Secretary General (Carine Kanimba) -Andrei Sannikov as Ombudsperson (Andrei Sannikov) -Chemi Lhami as Spokesperson (Chemi Lhamo), as well as the new Leadership Council representing the five regions of our organization. Together—with the moral clarity of our cause, the bravery of survivors, and the solidarity of democrats everywhere—we leave Berlin not as the end of a convening, but as the beginning of a new, stronger chapter in the fight for freedom. #unitedagainstdictators #togetherwearestronger
