Why is it different for the Sikh community? Balpreet Singh speaks with CTV News about the risks of deepening economic ties with India, arguing that this renewed engagement is anything but principled. He says it projects weakness, especially given the history of shootings, murders, and extortion in Canada linked to Indian state-directed activity.

"India targeted a Canadian politician on Canadian soil, that's an act of war" Watch Balpreet Singh's opening statement from today’s press conference held on June 12, 2025, held on behalf of a coalition of Sikh organizations, including the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee, BC Gurdwaras Council, Sikh Federation of Canada, Quebec Sikh Council, and the World Sikh Organization of Canada. This is in response to revelations that a suspected agent of the Indian government was actively surveilling Jagmeet Singh during his tenure as an MP and federal party leader. The Sikh community is outraged by these developments and deeply concerned by the federal government's conciliatory stance toward India. In response, Canadian Sikh organizations have issued three key demands: a public inquiry into India’s transnational repression, an end to all intelligence-sharing agreements with India, and concrete measures to safeguard the rights and security of Canadian Sikhs. Watch the full press conference:

On July 28th, 1984, over 2,500 Sikhs from around the world gathered at a convention at Madison Square Garden to chart a way forward after the attack on Darbar Sahib. This event would lead to the founding of the World Sikh Organization (WSO). Many well known Sikhs such as Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany (father of fibre optics) and Bhai Jeevan Singh were in attendance. For years, Indian nationalists have attempted to defame the WSO by sharing a short clip from a speaker who was neither a member of the WSO nor joined after the convention. The WSO did not officially exist at the time of this event. Sikhs from various places and groups attended, and not all of them ended up joining the WSO, which was formally founded following this event. A list of resolutions with specific demands of the Indian Government was passed at this convention. Those attendees who agreed on the resolutions came together to form the WSO International. #WSO #40Years

The Butcher vs. The Valiant | Part 2 - The Story of Punjab 1995 On September 6th, we honour the sacrifice of Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra and his pursuit to truth and seva. This video tells the story of two opposing figures in one of Punjab’s darkest chapter: K.P.S. Gill, the state’s powerful, controversial police chief, and Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, the human rights defender who exposed the murders of 25,000 Sikhs orchestrated by the Indian government. In 1995, Khalra’s fearless pursuit of truth led to his abduction and disappearance - an atrocity that exposed the brutality of state repression. Through archival footage, we revisit a battle between fear and courage, silence and truth, oppression and justice. Bhai Khalra talked about being a single candle which would fight the darkness. With his inspiration, countless more candles have been lit and will continue to burn until the darkness is finally dispelled.
