Bowden points to Houston, home to the largest medical center in the world, where most hospitals are nonprofit, tax-exempt, and yet generate billions in revenue. She notes that 18 of the top 20 nonprofits in Texas are hospitals. One example: Houston Methodist Hospital, the top nonprofit in the state by income, whose CEO reportedly earns over $6 million annually.
