This is the incorruptible body of Saint Bernadette Subrious (one of my favourite saints). She died at the age of 35. Saint Bernadette Soubirous, was a poor peasant girl from Lourdes who claimed that the Virgin Mary appeared to her 18 good times. People mocked her, questioned her, investigated and doubted her during her lifetime and suddenly later believed her after the miracle of Lourdes. She died in 1879. Thirty years later, in 1909, her body was exhumed. They were expecting to find only bones. Instead, they found a remarkably preserved body. When her body was exhumed in 1909, witnesses and physicians documented that it was remarkably well preserved, with the skin and body largely intact. They buried her again. She was exhumed again in 1919 (40 years after her death), they couldn't believe their eyes. Third exhumation in 1925, 46 years in the ground, same result, incorrupt. Across the exhumations, the preservation of her body was documented by medical professionals. Today, her body remains on display at the Chapel of Saint Bernadette in Nevers, France. You don't have to believe in miracles simply because someone tells you to. But you should at least ask the question: Why has this case endured for more than a century? Why were there multiple examinations? Why was her body found so remarkably preserved? And why is the Church still presenting her story to the world? The Catholic Church does not teach that every incorrupt body is automatically a miracle. But cases like Bernadette's certainly deserve investigation rather than dismissal. Sometimes, the evidence deserves a closer look. St Bernadette Subrious, pray for us.
