Spencer Jones needs to be in centerfield for the Yankees. Not sure why anybody would argue it at this point, when Grisham’s deteriorating skills are better suited as a corner outfielder. Jones has speed and an arm. He probably gets to this, too. Grisham looked slow as he tracked this down and that resulted in the flub.

George Lombard Jr. is almost too good to be true. At a minimum, the Yankees needed a fly ball here. He hits it in the air deep enough for Spencer Jones to score. GLJ just does all the little things right, which isn't something you can always say about this team 😆 None of this groundball nonsense, either.

The Yankees showed you how they feel about Camilo Doval today. In their second doubleheader of the week, they would rather go to Will Warren for .2 IP than let Doval throw a single pitch in 19 innings. Look, the offense stinks, but ignoring Doval entirely and forcing themselves to get creative, while also pitching Gerrit Cole and Max Fried today, was pretty gutsy. They could have played it safe and gone to Elmer, or done what they normally have done in the past: pretend the terrible player is doing just fine.

Baseball is so funny. Since last winter, the debate has been about who the Yankees should give more playing time to between Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero. Then it's June, and you have Cabby standing on first after getting hit by a pitch. Volpe barrels a triple that flies off his bat at 104.5 MPH. These debates are fun, and we should never stop having them, but baseball has always been the great equalizer. Guys usually find a way to play. Also, good for Volpe here. We've all been hard on him — rightfully so — so it's nice to see him playing well lately.

Jose Caballero having a blast on his way to the dugout after taking Canada’s soul. Cabby is an awesome bottom-of-the-order bat for the Yankees, and one of the league's better agitators. He is one of those guys who won’t play in an all-star game, and he’ll give you league-average production at best, but he always finds a way to impact a game, be it with his speed, or, today against the Blue Jays, by hitting an absolute bomb. Even if he's not the answer at short, you love the way he embraces whatever role he gets out in.

Paul Blackburn hit 96.9 MPH last night. It was the hardest-thrown pitch of his career. Blackburn's velo is way up this year. Last season, he threw only one pitch at 95 MPH. This season he hit that mark 26 times. Not sure what the Yankees are feeding him, but please keep giving it to him 🤣 What a surprise he has been. Ryan Weathers and Carlos Lagrange replacing Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough in the pen could be lethal. It already feels like Weathers is slowing down. He was sick last month and lost all that weight. On top of that, he pitched 38 innings last year and 86.2 the year before that. He’s already at 70 this season. Weathers hasn't ever had a full workload in a bit between the majors and minors. At some point, Max Fried will be back, and since Warren is built up, Weathers seems like the most clear choice to join the pen. Those 79 strikeouts to 20 walks play in there. He and Lagrange can really provide that swing and miss they’re lacking. That and they too can give more than one inning.

It's a two-hour drive from Scranton to Citizens Bank Park if the Yankees call up George Lombard Jr. on the off day today. There's no better time than now because he's on a heater. One thing George Lombard Jr. figured out this year is the ability to crush baseballs. At Triple-A, he has an average exit velocity of 92.7 MPH (93rd percentile) and a 49.6% hard hit rate (87th percentile). It’s up from where he was two years ago in Single-A. He had an 88.6 MPH average exit velo and a 35.9% hard-hit rate in 2024.

The Yankees should save Francisco Lindor from the Mets so he can finally be appreciated. There's a slim chance it happens, but it would be interesting to see what that trade would even look like. Lindor is 32 and will make $32 million per year through the 2031 season. That's a boatload of money, and this would likely be a salary dump. The only thing that makes me think the Yankees would even have a shot is that the few teams that might conceivably take on that salary are in the NL—no shot they send him to the Dodgers or Phillies. The Padres probably don't want another bloated contract either. The Yankees are the team that can afford him, even if Hal wants you to think his team is a mom-and-pop shop. More important than that, though, he'd be out of the National League.

Aaron Boone keeping Cam Schlittler in for eight innings was his gutsiest as manager. It was WAY more advanced than what Alexa Cora was lauded as a genius for. Anybody can decide a Cy Young candidate and an elite closer is the best way to take a game from the Yankees. Nobody goes eight innings anymore, let alone a rookie with a handful of innings. Young players usually have a short leash, but this felt like a strategy straight out of the Michael Kay caller's playbook, where they start by proclaiming they've been a fan for 50 years. It makes up for leaving Ben Rice on the bench in game one, hah. I am finally over that.

Aaron Judge was so happy as he rounded the bases when he homered in his first WBC at-bat. It's the type of reaction we rarely see out of Judge unless it's a big moment for the Yankees. He didn't even get like this while he was chasing Maris. You can tell the United States team is really into it this year. The whole thing about his speech was just brain rot discourse.

Gerrit Cole might not be human. It's the only way to explain why it feels like he looks better than he did when the Yankees last saw him in 2024. In Cole's second start back, he generated 15 swings and misses and averaged 96.4 MPH on his fastball. He was able to dial it up to 98 MPH twice and 97 nine times. Not to mention its back-to-back quality starts. If this is Cole knocking off the rust, what does he look like after 10 starts? In October??

The Yankees are using bulletin board material as motivation this postseason: • Cam Schlittler responded to 40-year-old podcasters airing out his mom's social media accounts. • Aaron Boone went at Buck Martinez, who said the Yankees aren't a good team. This is a little different than how these Yanks operated in the past, especially under Boone. Boone employs a more stoic approach to things, which feels a little jarring in this market, but they rarely acknowledge outside noise or allow criticisms to penetrate their walls. We’ve seen them do this other times as well. Last season, Cashman looked like he was ready to go to war with the reporters during the GM meetings. In some ways, they're allowing players to voice their frustrations about things they're going through with the team as well. Look at what happened with Jazz this week. He's a competitor who was pissed he didn't start in game one of the Wild Card. He voiced it, mentioning that he used MLB The Show to work through his frustrations. In the end, his defense and base running were a huge reason they won game two. His hit in game three extended the four-run rally too. Bulletin board material is what Belichick and Brady used to do during their glory days. CC Sabathia mentioned that he did the same thing when he pitched. CC, in particular, said he picked a person out of a lineup and told himself that they were trashing him or saying they didn't believe in him. Look, whatever works. They just beat Boston, who owned them all year. If this is the edge they feel they need for a team they went 5-8 against, I love it. Keep yapping if you need to.
