This is the moment when I scored a goal in football whilst playing with the orphans in Palestine. I’m extremely rusty. 😊 Seeing them smile, considering they have lost their parents, was the highlight of today. Alhamdulillah.

Question: I saw this video on YouTube titled “Why are all molvis fat?”. The Moulana gives a reason, is this a valid justification? Answer: Irrespective of whether a person is a scholar or not, overeating is highly blameworthy in our religion. In fact, less eating is the Sunna of our beloved Prophet ﷺ - this is clear from his blessed Seerah. If a person is fat, or has a large stomach, due to biological or medical conditions, then they are excused. But to intentionally eat whereby a person puts so much weight on to the point that their belly walks in front of them is censurable. Our mother Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ‘Never did the family of Muhammad ﷺ eat to the fill, since their arrival to Al-Madinah, the bread of wheat for three successive nights until his death’ (Bukhari). Our beloved Prophet ﷺ said: 'No man fills a container worse than his stomach. A few morsels that keep his back upright are sufficient for him. If he has to, then he should keep one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for his breathing’ (al-Tirmidhi). Imam Al-Ghazali argues in his al-Arba’een that the cause of all spiritual illnesses is overeating as it induces a person to fulfil their desires and commit sin. Hence, the first spiritual illness he begins with in the third chapter of this book is overeating. Finally, trying to look after your physical health, as well as spiritual, is part of our din. And Allah knows best. May He, the Almighty, enable us all. Amin.
