Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, the governor of Benue State, is a suspended Catholic priest. Bishop John Cardinal Onaiyekan has spoken about Governor Alia’s suspension, explaining that he failed to meet the conditions set by the Catholic Church before entering politics. According to the bishop, the Catholic Church has specific rules that priests must comply with before they can enter partisan politics. Reverend Father Alia was suspended by his bishop after failing to meet those requirements. The bishop further explained that Catholic Church rules place strict restrictions on priests, including bishops, participating in politics unless they meet the stipulated conditions.

He said he came down from the car to talk to the youths involved to tell them that was not the way to expend their energy instead they could have siezed the opportunity to tell him the problems they are facing in Benue.
