The Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to build a single African market that supports innovation. From a start-up’s new technology in Nairobi to a fashion brand in Dakar, a medical breakthrough in Cairo, or music from Lagos, the Protocol makes it easier to protect and commercialise intellectual property across Africa. The Protocol focuses on several key areas: 1. Aligning IP rules across African countries to lower barriers for innovators and businesses 2. Encouraging national IP offices and regional organisations to work together for better protection and enforcement 3. Helping innovators, researchers, creatives, and entrepreneurs secure patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and geographical indications 4. Promoting technology transfer, research, investment, and innovation to support sustainable industry and growth For Africa's innovators, intellectual property is more than just a legal idea. Ahead of the AU Extraordinary Summit on Health, Ghana's Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has affirmed the nation's readiness to host African leaders in Accra on 21–22 July 2026. "Every infection we stop. Every mother we protect from a preventable death. Every disease we hold back. Every health system we build stronger these are the steps that carry Africa toward a fairer, healthier, and more sovereign future." The Summit will convene African leaders to fast-track progress on ending AIDS by 2030, cutting preventable maternal deaths, and strengthening resilient, sovereign health systems that deliver quality care to every African.

The 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union will take place on 11–12 February 2026, followed by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government on 13–14 February 2026. Opening statements at the Executive Council will be delivered by: 1. H.E Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission 2. H.E Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia 3. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of UNECA 4. H.E Téte António, Chairperson of the Executive Council and Angola Minister of Foreign Affairs. The G20–Africa High-Level Dialogue at the African Union Headquarters advanced Africa’s priorities on debt sustainability, financial reform, and the cost of capital. The Dialogue’s key messages will feed into the Johannesburg Declaration and strengthen Africa’s collective advocacy within the #G20Africa.
