Training with the pistols! Tanzutsu are mechanically the same as the longer guns, but the loading and firing techniques are slightly different. Most of these matchlocks weren’t built with combat on mind, and the examples we use come from the late Edo era; a time when modern revolvers were being used in the rest of the world.

This is an anti material weapon…. I’m tired of ‘scholars’ saying ‘oh but the cavalry…’, ‘that could not hit…’; so slow’. We know. This is not a general infantry weapon. If you were a battlefield commander in samurai Japan - how would you use this weapon? This is what they had.

I wish this ozutsu was a regular display piece at Matsumoto Castle; but it is normally kept in a climate controlled vault, with the rest of the highly valuable and unique weapons in the collection.

This is the closest the samurai could get to ‘rapid fire’, during that period of history. It wasn’t until the introduction of cartridge fed weapons in the mid 1800’s that tactics started to change. But by then the samurai were coming to an end…
