The U.S. Army secretly sprayed a #cancer causing chemical cadmium over the Pruitt-Igoe housing projects and surrounding low-income, predominantly #Black neighborhoods in St. Louis. The Army selected a vulnerable, predominantly Black community for these experiments. Residents were not informed and were used as human test subjects. Conducted during the Cold War in the 1950s and 1960s, these experiments exposed thousands of residents without their knowledge or consent. The Army admitted to spraying zinc cadmium sulfide as part of a biological weapons simulation. Cadmium is now a known human carcinogen, and evidence suggests that Army researchers were aware of its toxicity even at the time. According to government records, the spraying was part of a series of tests called Operation LAC (Large Area Coverage). The goal was to study how aerosolized biological or chemical agents would disperse over a large urban area. Historians and activists note that St. Louis was chosen specifically because its population density and terrain made it a good stand-in for Moscow.
