In my opinion, If you spend 1-2 lakh/month today in a metro city for a family of 4 including education and rent/ emi, You would need roughly 8-10 crore by age 60 as a retirement corpus to live comfortably. But Sandeep Jethwani of Dezerv tells me that inflation, lifestyle creep and unexpected health costs can inflate your retirement expenses much more than you think and 8-10cr is not enough. he says a family of 4 spending 1-2 lakhs per month today need a 40cr retirement corpus in 20 years to maintain a certain lifestyle. That got me thinking about how the numbers keep getting more and more unattainable and the frustration among the youth is palpable due to lack of jobs and opportunities to grow income. Whats the solution then ? reduce your expenses, cut lifestyle creep, stop comparison and decide what your definition of enough is. Thoughts ?

“If you feel very uncertain about IT services , it probably means it is the best time to enter the sector. The more uncertain you get about something , the greater is your profit opportunity. Professor Pattu of freefincal has 60% of his mutual fund exposure in one single fund : the PPFAS flexicap fund. I asked him the reason for this and does it worry him that the fund has high cash levels and high exposure to IT stocks. His answer was both candid and endearing 😊 He likes the fact that there is low churn and there is downside protection. Also as a long term investor, he prefers to never do back seat driving. Thank you for the great feedback on this episode. ✨

HCL tech is at a fresh 52 week low today and getting hit hard post earnings. A few weeks ago I spoke to Kenneth Andrade of Old Bridge Capital on why he exited IT stocks completely earlier this year. "We dont know whats happening in the tech sector. will we know in the next quarter ? maybe, maybe not. If i had to build a portfolio today , I would build it without tech names" he says. He explained that the terminal value of the IT businesses are falling and there is a lot of uncertainty in whether these businesses can continue to grow in the same way as earlier.

Why do we keep talking about building a retirement corpus ? Because people underestimate how much inflation can eat into one’s savings over the years. On this week’s episode we spoke to personal finance educator, Dr Pattabiraman , professor at IIT Madras and founder of FreeFincal, also fondly known as professor pattu. M Pattabiraman Professor pattu talks about how to plan for your retirement by keeping return expectations and living expenses low. If you spend ₹1 lakh every month, how much money do you actually need to retire? He breaks down the math We discuss all this and more.
