It’s heartbreaking to see how Archaeological Survey of India Archaeological Survey of India is facilitating the destruction of the 8th century Martand Sun temple built by Lalitaditya Muktapida in Anantnag, my home district! Sikander Shah Miri in 14th century destroyed it out of his religious fanaticism. What excuse does ASI have to let this extremely significant monument become a playground and gymnastics ground for kids, shelter for addicts, park/walkway for locals? There are no restrictions, no SOPs, no officials, no ticket counters, no security guards, absolutely nobody looking after the national heritage site. Anyone can access it at anytime, do anything they want with no institutional check! This is not only the destruction of national heritage but it’s also furthering the ethnic cleansing of my community, which is still trying to reverse it by fighting for Sharda and our other temples. Madam Minister Meenakashi Lekhi, please intervene. Will be grateful. 🙏

The escalators at Jammu railway station have been defunct for almost a year, or perhaps even longer. Everyone—from the elderly to the infirm, and those carrying heavy luggage—is forced to take the stairs, as even the ramp is not allowed to be used. Never mind the other challenges, about which I could write tomes as a regular train traveller. Nobody seems to care about the poor and middle classes in this country.

Over the past 25 years, I have taken up numerous causes as a journalist for the sake of the common citizens of India, particularly in Kashmir. Throughout my career, I have paid a heavy price for speaking truth to power, including during my 2019 testimony at the US Congress. Now, five years later, I am back, still asking tough questions about the swamp. Today, it was great to speak up and pose questions at the Oval Office in the White House before President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the challenges to electoral democracy within both the US and India.

Article 370 was inducted in the Indian Constitution following the 1947 war between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, engineered by the British Colonial rulers. Brilliant arguments put forward by senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi before the Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud. This is a must watch to understand history, geopolitics and law.

In the last 35 years, hardly any celebrity has bothered to visit, let alone showcase, Kashmir’s Shaivist heritage. It’s heartening to see DILJIT DOSANJH praying at the Shri Adi Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar a few days ago. Setting aside his political statements, Diljit Dosanjh has consistently supported faiths across all lines, much like the men and women leading top offices. Have seen videos show him praying at Ujjain and Darbar Sahib, wearing a turban, and folding his hands in reverence, just as he enthusiastically supported India’s top businessman, Mukesh Ambani, at their wedding this year.

I am here in Washington, DC, for work, but I can’t forget that today marks 35 years since January 19, 1990, when over 300,000 indigenous Kashmiri Hindus, including myself, were driven out of our homes in Kashmir by Pakistan-sponsored jihadi terrorists. Overnight, we, the aborigines, became homeless and were thrust into a struggle for survival in refugee camps and slums in the scorching heat of the plains (video below). The Kashmir of my grandparents’ and parents’ generation, which had been a progressive society in the 1950s ( turned into hell in the 1990s. We, the people of Kashmir, paid a huge price for the catastrophic US policy of empowering jihadists during the Cold War in the Indian subcontinent. We remain in exile, hoping to return to our homes in Kashmir someday. I hope that when President Donald J. Trump takes office tomorrow, his cabinet, especially Tulsi Gabbard 🌺, will ensure that history for Hindus does not repeat itself in Bangladesh. Rarely in recent memory has India witnessed such an ocean of grief for a cultural icon. The outpouring of sorrow and heartfelt tributes in Assam for Assamese singer and musician, Zubeen Garg—whose untimely passing is both shocking and tragic—reflect the indelible mark he left on the soul of his people. What an extraordinary hero, immortal in the hearts that he touched!

I felt terrible sadness and shame. Guilt. Remorse. I bowed my head in forgiveness and gratefulness. My community, the Kashmiri Saraswat Brahmins, owes its very existence to the ninth Sikh Guru, Shri Tegh Bahadur Ji, who sacrificed his life to protect us from annihilation at the hands of the Mughal barbarian Aurangzeb. While the historical memory of the Guru’s immense sacrifice is preserved, there is no pilgrimage by Kashmiri Hindus to Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Chandni Chowk, Delhi—where the Guru was beheaded—or to Gurudwara Anandpur Sahib in Punjab and Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, where his head and body were cremated, respectively. What is even more disheartening is that today, November 24, the day commemorating the Guru’s supreme sacrifice, most of us fail to teach our children about its significance or the gratitude we owe to the Sikh Gurus. We all are contributing to our collective forgetfulness, sliding deeper into an abyss as a community. Out of deep regret and profound respect, I visited Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib today. I stood there in complete surrender before the Guru, seeking solace and paying homage to his unparalleled sacrifice. Jo bole so nihal, Sat Sri Akal! 🪯🕉️

Today is the first day of Navratri—the festival devoted to Goddess Durga and all her avatars. Millions of Hindu devotees worship today Goddess Shailputri (the daughter of the king of the Himalayas—Goddess Parvati). The only ancient temple dedicated to Shailaputri across India is in Varahmul (Baramulla), Kashmir. Feeling blessed that I was able to visit and pray at her temple today.
