I'm enjoying this life stage where my main ambition is to be a really good pillow for cats.

In case you were wondering what sort of day Gus was having.

Kitten update #27: It's been a whole month with the kittens now. Jeff accidentally slipped up and called them "our kittens" and I am treating it as a concession of belonging if not an outright enforceable claim of title. They've tripled in weight and are doing all of the big cat behaviors - the arched back, the hissing, the batting at you with their little paws from some hidden corner, the wild eyes with the ears back preceding the pounce-and-run. They've got mostly full range of the upstairs now and their little paws thunder all over the wood floors like the Khan's armies in a full charge across the steppe. Friendship with Buffy is deepening, to the apparent enjoyment of both.

Kitten update #15: As you all kindly warned me, I've spent the morning watching the kitties play with a paper bag, an old sock tied in a knot, and a crumpled ball of aluminum foil while turning their noses up at the fancy toys I offer them. Wet food has turned out not to be exactly the gamechanger I'd hoped for, so far. They just eat it and still cry for their bottles. The nice thing is that I can leave the saucer for them to eat in their crate so they don't wake up and immediately transform into screaming gremlins charging me like Persians at Plataea. One thing that's been surprising is that despite what a dirty process learning to eat wet food is, they are cleaning themselves up very well afterwards. I'd kind of assumed I'd have to teach/encourage them a little but they are way ahead of me. Gray Tuxedo, for example, seems to think that eating is a two-hand job:

Kitten update #12: It was at this point that I realized, in fact, ALL of the kittens are demonic. I can't believe how active they're getting. They climb all over me constantly and cling screaming to my shirt as I desperately try to fling them off with one hand while my other tries to feed a tiny monster that reacts to the bottle like Regan to holy water in the Exorcist. Just as I get free of one, the next one is flying up my sleeve like the Dread Pirate Roberts on the Cliffs of Insanity. I was nearly overwhelmed until Buffy saved the day by barging in to lick cat butts as furiously as a hungry kid with an ice cream cone on a hot summer day and I was able to escape mostly unscathed except for a bottle hand and forearm that looks like a leper fell into a thorn bush. The pellets were definitely the problem because this morning I filled the box with playground sand and they understood immediately what to do. Perhaps they can still find salvation. Just look at how fast the little terrors are moving now!

A couple of the kitties are really getting the hang of the bottle now.

Kitten update #13: Finally, a bit of respite as the kittens have both taken to the litter box with a zero percent fail rate in 24 hours, and have also learned how to entertain themselves with some battle royale. Jeff found some thick cotton gloves stashed in the garage that have been a huge upgrade to the feeding experience. I still look like I wear barbed wire for jewelry but at least we're not adding new damage at this point. Slow but incremental progress on the solid food. I have convinced a couple of the kittens to suck it off my finger; while I was doing that, brown tabby stuck her head in the can I was holding in my other hand and ate a bunch of it. I hope she does it again where the other kittens can see it! View of the coliseum floor:

Kitten update #14: Two weeks as a cat mom and the progress is pretty amazing. They've nearly doubled in weight, reliably use the litter box, and - praise be to everything holy - started eating wet food off the saucer yesterday when I apparently failed to give them bottles the second they wanted them during The Glarer 's fundraiser stream for Turtleboy. So, I owe Will a big thank you for contributing to kitten independence. They also sleep a lot less and already get bored with toys quickly. I've started to let them roam a little more freely in the bedroom their crate is in since they reliably seek out and find the letterbox when needed. I definitely have caught a couple of the kitties tasting the sand so I'm glad I didn't use the clumping litter that was easy to find. Still waiting for deliveries of litter and toys to help them not mistake me for a climbing tree. The demons are very much learning to flex their evil. Random bites and scratches are now pretty routine. At the same time, Lilith pawed at my face for a good half hour last night with her claws retracted and didn't go for my eyeballs once, so they seem to be a bit conflicted with their capacity for goodness. Hunting, however, is already super fun. Evidence:

Kitten update #34: The kittens have won. It only took a few days for Buffy to realize that being mommy is exhausting, and like Greeks vaunting over their fallen Trojan foes, the kitties are now relentlessly tormenting her at every opportunity, forcing her to always nap with one eye open. The harness is still a little too big to use but I put it on Corona so she can start getting the feel of it. It reminded me a bit of when you first put socks on dogs but I'm sure pretty soon she'll go ahead and be normal, especially when she realizes the trade off is getting to go outside.

Kitten update #29: Kitties roaming the house is starting to be normalized, which is nice because it means Buffy can chill out once in a while and take a break from chasing them around to lick them and - her new thing - trying to drag them around in her mouth. But even if she's still calming down, she still wants to be involved with them all the time. So they are teaching her how to cat, which has been great fun for everyone. Still, it's very exhausting work.

Kitten update #10: It's moving day for the kitties. They've started to eliminate on their own in their little box, so they are now going into one of the old vizsla crates that is big enough for them, their heating pad, their litter box, wee pads, and some extra room to play and move around. The crate last housed the spring chicks so I was pretty paranoid about bleaching it down so we can keep cycling exotic viruses through birds, humans, dogs, and cats to a minimum. We also have our first name for a kitty. Dark Tortie is now known as Lilith, because she is a tiny adorable demon in cat skin. The kitties can still barely walk but Lilith is already trying to pounce on her siblings and responds to kisses with claws to the face. I'm sure wild-eyed zoomies are just a few weeks away. Busy morning here so relax with some ASMR bottle suckles for as long as you need.

Kitten update #36 The poll isn't even over yet but the box definitely won. But it was a little bit of an unfair match up because Jeff turned the box into an exciting game of whack-a-cat. The kitties' eyes are really changing fast now. Gus still has a bright blue ring around the outside of his iris but the rest is pretty green-gold.
