The following account of the shipwreck was printed in The Inquirer and Mirror newspaper in 1945, and recounts how the Nantucketers assigned to the Surfside lifesaving station jumped into action to save the crew of the Warren Sawyer: “Patrolman Eugene Clisby sighted the schooner’s lights of Miacomet Rip and hastened to the station to ‘call all hands.’ The surf was raging, completely enveloping the craft with only the swaying masts visible in the blackness of the night. Capt. Veeder shot a line over the jib-stay, putting it this far forward to avoid hitting anyone on board. But the sailors were too numbed with the cold to attempt going forward to secure it. Finally patrolman Williams, during a smooth sea, rushed down the beach and with a hand-line swung a line over her bow. The sailors made their way across the sea-washed decks and secured the line. A hawser was made fast and a breeches buoy rigged. “With the schooner lurching under the impact of the seas, it was a difficult task to keep a steady strain on the hawser, but the experienced life savers worked unceasingly and with the coming of the morning of the 23rd, all hands had been safely landed on the beach.”

Police have Main Street blocked off with caution tape for the second time this week. This time officers have firearms drawn. A Nantucket Police officer just said they may be dealing with someone who is armed and dangerous. “We were at Club Car having dinner and the police told everyone to leave as there is another bomb threat for Main Street,” one witness told the Current. The Gaslight was also ordered closed by public safety author totes. On Tuesday, a bomb threat incident on lower Main Street similarly prompted a heavy law enforcement response to the area, where officers blocked off streets, closed businesses, and prevented pedestrians from walking on the sidewalks. When we know more we will update this post.

LAST CALL AT THE GAZEBO 😭 These were the final moments at The Gazebo Monday night, as owner Luke Tedeschi said goodbye to a gathering of loyal customers and longtime staff ahead of the closure of his establishment after 34 seasons in business. While the property will likely reopen next year under a new operator chosen by Nantucket Island Resorts, it was the end of an era for Tedeschi and his team. After addressing the crowd, Tedeschi drew the winning ticket for the last mudslide, served in a crystal chalice, which was was claimed by Spencer West, one of his bartenders and an island native. The raffle was a fundraiser for Addiction Solutions of Nantucket. Monday marked the final night of the final season for the Gazebo as the island has come to know it. Steve Karp’s Nantucket Island Resorts declined to offer Tedeschi an extension of his lease after 34 years, or even give him an opportunity to match any offers from other bidders. “This will be the last year of the Gazebo’s mudslide as we know it and the reason is because after this being the 34th season, I’ll be moving on because I did not get a lease renewal or even a lease renewal offer from the company that owns the real estate that I currently have a lease with, Nantucket Island Resorts (NIR),” Tedeschi told the Current in May. “You know, that’s the way that term leases are, but after all these years, I brought the mudslide to the Gazebo back in 1993, and this will be the last year of my formula and my mudslide as we’ve all got to know it, to enjoy it, and it’s become iconic.”

A fisherman reeled in a great white shark on Nantucket’s south shore on Sunday, as dozens of people gathered on the beach to watch and record the spectacle. Elliot Sudal has been fishing for sandbar sharks and other species during the summers for more than a decade. On Sunday, he was out fishing on the south shore with his apprentice, Stone Fornes, and fellow angler Nathan Skerritt, when they realized they had a big one on the line. The Current caught up with Sudal on Monday to ask about the catch that has since made headlines in Boston and beyond. Q: What were you fishing for? A: We were just out testing the waters, conditions looked great, just wanted to see if anything was around. Everything has been showing up earlier the last few years, sandbar sharks, duskys, sand tigers, roughtail rays. The water’s still in the 50s, but they’re here. Q: What are the rules for this type of fishing? A: That was the first white I’ve hooked in 13 years on Nantucket. Caught 1000-plus sandbars and hundreds of duskys off the beach, tagged most of them along the way. By no means was targeting that white, you can’t control what picks up your bait. I posted that video because I feel like I did everything right in that situation. Shark was in the surf, removed the hook and sent her back to sea in about 15 seconds. If you are into shark fishing here, use appropriate heavy tackle, barbless circle hooks, and release immediately. Take the online course, get involved with a tagging program. Understand people are watching you, respect the animal and be safe. Q: What did you do when you realized it was a white? A: Saw the spotted pectoral fin flash in a wave and just focused. Understood the gravity of the situation and had to get her released safely and quickly. Amazing creature, humbled to be blessed with the opportunity to interact with one. Had a great crew helping with everything, she swam off strong, not something we will ever forget. 🎥: Bryner
