“From crisis through crisis to crisis” As #Ethiopia’s government prepares to conduct the 7th general election on Monday, 01 June, Merera Gudina, chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), outlines four scenarios he believes could define Ethiopia’s political trajectory going forward; a free and fair election is not one of them. Prof. Merera argues that Ethiopia’s transition has been “from crisis through crisis to crisis.” To break this cycle, he called on both the ruling party and opposition forces to “come to our senses” and work toward an all-inclusive national dialogue, genuine transitional justice, and a broad national consensus. #Tigray: Getachew, Tsadkan give stark warnings over region’s future Senior Tigrayan figures Getachew Reda and Lt. Gen. Tsadkan Gebretensae delivered blunt remarks in the political impasse in Tigray region. Getachew suggested those he accused of pushing for fighting to be targeted and struck “selectively”. Tsadkan, meanwhile, described societies in crisis as either erupting in “revolt” or collapsing inward and “imploding.” Their remarks were made during the formation of a new council described as a temporary body aimed at solving the current political crisis in the Tigray Region. The Council was officially established on 17 May in Addis Abeba, with organizers saying it will serve until an inclusive administration is established in the region. Watch

#Ethiopia: “If there is any Ethiopian who believes that Ethiopia will forever remain a geographic prisoner, that person is a dead one,” PM Abiy Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reiterated his government’s position that Ethiopia “must be relieved from the shuttered doors and the isolation” that he believes has contributed to its poverty. He made the remarks at the inauguration of his latest book, Medemer, on Tuesday night. “It is not wise to assume that a country as large as Ethiopia should be handed to our children while encapsulated,” Abiy said while ruling out the prospects of “conflict and war.” However, he said that Ethiopians should not believe in the notion that Ethiopia will remain "a geographic prisoner." #US supports Ethiopia’s push for maritime access; says is “very important” and should be pursued “through commercial means” and “peaceful, diplomatic contexts” The United States supports Ethiopia’s efforts to expand maritime access “through commercial means” and “through peaceful and diplomatic contetexts,” said Ervin Massinga, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, who emphasized that the issue is critical given the country’s economic trajectory. “With the economy growing as quickly as it is,” and with forecasts showing continued expansion, Amb. Massinga told state media that, “expanding maritime access is important.” He added that supporting such efforts “is something that the United States government, my embassy, intend to support going forward.” The ambassador noted that Washington “understands this issue.” Speaking about Washington’s engagement with Ethiopia, the ambassador said the U.S. approach involves “working with the country of Ethiopia’s size,” but added that “more important than its size” is “its influence and its capacity to help the region restabilize.” “That is a core bedrock approach of the United States,” he said, and affirmed that it “will be a central point of what the United States is going to be doing” in the Horn of Africa. Video: #Ethiopia’s President Sahle-Work Zewde admits Ethiopians are unable to create a “national narrative” that “unites us”, unable to build a state that enjoys “legitimacy” by majority of Ethiopians, and unable to “reconcile our differences.” The president said this in her annual opening speech outlining the government’s priorities at the joint session by the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) and House of Federation (HoF) this afternoon. President Sahle-Work also highlighted that these failures have led Ethiopia to “become two-faced”: one that signifies the failures and the other that defines a country that has rich national gifts, culture, and the history of independence She also admitted that Ethiopians have failed to reconcile their differences with each other and instead resorted to have “civil wars” and violence that are costing the country incalculable prices. The President cautioned that the country should mend this broken track-record and correct these contradictions. In order to do this, Ethiopians should “pause and evaluate” the road that the country came so far to consider what’s been beneficial and what’s been costly for the country to ensure the foundations to hand over a better country for future generations are laid. The new chapter the country is going through now is not of “few individuals”, but of a collective chapter for “all Ethiopians”, she said. Ethiopians should move head with the issues they agree on and engage in dialogue on the issues of disagreement. “History should not become the source of our differences,” the president said, adding that more time must be invested in mapping out the future of the country. For third time, #Trump repeats claim that U.S. funded construction of #GERD Speaking at a White House dinner on Friday, where President Donald Trump hosted Republican senators, he repeated the claim - for the third time in a month - that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD) was funded by the United States. “Ethiopia built a dam with United States money, largely,” he said. In reality, the #GERD is entirely funded by the people of #Ethiopia through public contributions and domestic resources. It poses no threat to #Egypt’s water security. Once again, Addis Standard calls on the #Ethiopian government to step up its diplomatic engagement with the United States and take a firm stand to counter and correct these misleading narratives.

#Ethiopian senior defense official cites ‘history’, ‘national survival’, and ‘security’ to justify need for #Red_Sea presence Major General Teshome Gemechu, Director-General of International Relations and Military Cooperation at the Ministry of Defense, has reiterated Ethiopia’s resolve to secure access to the Red Sea, particularly Assab, describing it as a historical right and a matter of national survival. He outlined four justifications: Ethiopia’s historic ties to Assab, international law provisions for landlocked states, existential survival needs, and growing security threats. “The Red Sea was once part of us. Assab was part of our territory,” he said, questioning the legitimacy of the transitional government in the early 1990s that allowed Eritrea’s secession. Citing “security concerns”, Maj. Gen. Teshome warned that Ethiopia’s cities, including Addis Abeba, could face “missile threats” from the sea, making military presence essential to safeguard national interests. He nonetheless said that Ethiopia’s priority remains a diplomatic solution. Watch

#Coming_UP: The Standard Signal | Ep. 11: Meles Zenawi’s Nightmare Revisited: GERD, Gulf Money, and the Unmaking of Sovereignty Fifteen years ago, Ethiopia’s late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi warned that his nightmare would be an “Egyptian agenda financed by Gulf money.” Today, that warning reads less like prophecy and more like diagnosis. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Ethiopia’s clearest symbol of sovereignty, is facing a coercive rhetoric from the U.S., and Gulf money, particularly from the United Arab Emirates, is deepening its imprint on Ethiopia’s economy, security, and diplomacy. Is Ethiopia’s sovereignty being defended, or quietly traded? Has Meles Zenawi’s nightmare already arrived? In this episode of The Standard Signal, Tsedale Lemma speaks with Jawar Mohammed to examine how this convergence in the Horn of Africa is exposing the growing fragility of the Ethiopian state. #Ethiopia: The concluding questions and answers exchanged between Congressman Brad Sherman and Amb. Mike Hammer during today's open hearing on 'Ethiopia: Promise or Perils, The State of U.S. Policy,' raised the spectrum of challenges to the Ethiopian government's recent announcement to hold a "referendum" to settle the status of #Western_Tigray, which is still occupied by #Amhara forces. Congressman Sherman asserted that while the Pretoria agreement stated resolving the issue of Western Tigray in accordance with the constitution, the government plans to hold a referendum, and that "nothing is more phony than a referendum after an ethnic cleansing." In response, Amb. Hammer admitted that "we are all impatient", and "recognize the urgent need" for the internally displaced Tigrayans to be able to return to their homes, who are living under "horrific circumstances."
