ΓΟΡΔΙΟΝ 1921: "Όταν η γαλανόλευκη κυμάτισε 60 χλμ. έξω από την Άγκυρα" Στις 18 Αυγούστου 1921 ο Ελληνικός στρατός έφθασε στην αρχαία πόλη Γόρδιον η Πολατλί όπως αποκαλείται στα τουρκικά. Εκεί η ταμπέλα γράφει "'Αγκυρα 60 χλμ." Δίπλα από το αρχαίο Γόρδιον περνάει χειμαρρώδης ο ποταμός Σαγγάριος. Οι Έλληνες κάτοικοι της περιοχής υποδέχονται τους ευζώνους με δάκρυα και μεγάλο ενθουσιασμό. "Στην Άγκυρα, στην Άγκυρα" φωνάζουν οι εύζωνες. Δυστυχώς το όνειρο και η χαρά θα σβήσουν σε λίγες μόνο ημέρες, όταν στις 29 Αυγούστου 1921, ο Αντιστράτηγος Παπούλας θα υπογράψει την διαταγή οπισθοχώρησης των Ελληνικών στρατευμάτων απο το Πολατλί. Είναι χαρακτηριστική η ανταπόκριση του Έρνεστ Χέμινγουεϊ, που κάλυπτε τότε τα γεγονότα ως απεσταλμένος της «Torondo Sun» στον πόλεμο: «Οι Έλληνες ήταν πρώτης τάξεως πολεμιστές και σίγουρα κάμποσα σκαλοπάτια παραπάνω από τον στρατό του Κεμάλ. Πιστεύω ότι οι τσολιάδες θα είχαν καταλάβει την Άγκυρα – και θα είχαν τελειώσει τον πόλεμο – αν δεν είχαν προδοθεί». CYPRUS FREEDOM GORDON 1921: "When the blue and white waved 60 km outside Ankara" On August 18, 1921 the Greek army reached the ancient city of Gordion, or Polatli as it is called in Turkish. There the sign reads "Ankara 60 km." Next to the ancient Gordion is the torrential river Saggarius. The Greek inhabitants of the area greet the euzonim with tears and great enthusiasm. "To Ankara, to Ankara" the guerrillas shout. Unfortunately, the dream and the joy will be extinguished in just a few days, when on August 29, 1921, Lieutenant General Papoulas will sign the order for the retreat of the Greek troops from Polatli. The response of Ernest Hemingway, who was then covering the events as the Torondo Sun's envoy to the war, is typical: "The Greeks were first-class warriors and certainly a few steps above Kemal's army. I believe the Cholias would have taken Ankara - and ended the war - if they had not been betrayed."
