CABO DELGADO IS BLEEDING — AND THE WORLD CONTINUES TO LOOK AWAY On 28 July 2025, just two days ago, thousands of families were once again forced to flee their homes in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique. Entire communities left everything behind — running for their lives, carrying fear, grief, and uncertainty. This is not a new crisis. It is yet another tragic chapter in a brutal and protracted conflict that began in 2017. For eight years, the people of Cabo Delgado have endured waves of displacement, violence, and abandonment. They have suffered in silence, while the world — and often their own government — looked away. ➡️ Children growing up without security. ➡️ Parents unable to provide shelter, food, or education. ➡️ Villages burned, memories erased, lives uprooted. ➡️ Fear replacing hope as the daily reality. Since 2017, Cabo Delgado has become a battlefield of geopolitics, extractive interests, and violent extremism — but it is ordinary people who have paid the price. And yet, despite everything, the response has been marked by silence — or worse, neglect. While terror continues to speak, the State remains muted, absent, or complicit through inaction. This cannot become our new normal. We cannot allow Cabo Delgado to remain a forgotten corner of Mozambique — invisible to national decision-makers, and irrelevant to the global community. This is not only about counterterrorism or military response. 💔 Massacre at Maputo Central Prison: Over 130 Lives Lost The tragic events at Maputo’s Central Prison and BO have left over 130 confirmed victims, exposing severe human rights violations and unimaginable brutality by the security forces. 📌 The Escape On December 25, prisoners seized two AKM weapons from the Penitentiary Guard, taking two guards hostage. In the chaos, over 2,000 prisoners fled, while around 300 remained detained. Security forces—including the GOI (Intervention Operations Group), UIR (Rapid Intervention Unit), and the military—launched operations, recapturing more than 300 prisoners. 📌 The Massacre Following their recapture, prisoners were taken to a room within the penitentiary. That night, between December 25 and 26, a massacre unfolded. Over 100 prisoners were executed by security forces. This adds to the 33 prisoners killed during the escape, bringing the death toll to over 130. 📌 The Impact on Families Families who arrived at the penitentiary to bring food to their loved ones were told to go to the Central Hospital. Some found their relatives injured; others were sent to the morgue, where countless bodies remain unidentified.
