Going to take a bit to get used to seeing Zuffa Boxing parading their boxers around every big UFC event. Ryan Garcia, Conor Benn, and Shakur Stevenson were all on stage during McGregor and Holloway’s final face off. All three have thrown some choice words at UFC fighters in general, or McGregor specifically, over the years. Meanwhile, Dana White scoffs anytime a UFC fighter merely mentions Zuffa Boxing 😂

And that is what Ronda still seems to miss. Fans did not turn on her because she lost to Holly Holm. They reacted to how she handled it afterward. She essentially disappeared, acted like no one deserved to hear from her, then came back to fight Amanda Nunes only under the condition that she would do zero media. She lost, disappeared again, and did not do an interview for years. How are fans supposed to stay attached to someone who shuts everyone out and leaves her diehard supporters wondering what just happened? And if we are talking about examples, Chuck Liddell and Rampage Jackson are about the last names she should bring up. Those guys lost plenty of fights throughout all stages of their career and fans still loved them. They were stars because of their personalities, their heart, and how they handled wins and losses. After hearing every McGregor vs. Holloway take over the last few days I keep coming back to one statistic. ❗️In the first five minutes of their 2013 fight, Conor threw 43 kicking attacks, including 8 jumping switch kicks, the strike he opened the rematch with. If Conor and his team rewatched Holloway fight even once, as I’m sure they did, one thing stood out immediately: the success of the kicks. ◾️After years of criticism that he’d become too flat footed or boxing heavy, this felt like an attempt to bring back the old Conor. It wasn’t one kick. It was an entire style. Light on his feet. Kicks from every angle. ◾️But, of course, 13 years is an eternity in MMA. You can recreate the blueprint, but time still plays its part. As for the injury, I don’t think he entered fight night seriously compromised. And maybe it’s the years of watching the MMA gods throw a wrench into historic moments, but I can’t help wondering if whatever happened to Conor’s knee occurred in the final moments before or even during the walkout. Perhaps even the now-viral shoe clip. We’ve seen stranger things. Tony Ferguson tore his ACL tripping over a television wire, like cmon now. All it takes is one awkward movement. And if that was the case, and the injury happened seconds before the opening bell, the opening flying switch kick makes more sense. I believe that opening was always the plan. It fit the original game plan, and psychologically it oddly made sense for a fighter returning after five years away whose last fight ended with a broken leg. We’ve heard Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman describe wanting to throw an early kick after returning from the same injury to prove to themselves everything was okay. Who knows, but either way, it’s wild to go back and watch these first five minutes of McGregor vs. Holloway 1 for so many reasons.

Still wild to think Conor and Khabib’s initial faceoff basically had Dana White and a prayer between them. Police were on stage, but stayed back. Today’s Khamzat vs Strickland faceoff had what felt like 10 security guards or police officers essentially holding them during the staredown.

Interestingly, if you go back and rewatch Conor’s post fight interview after losing to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, a lot of the comments point out the contrast between how he handled the loss and how Ronda handled hers at UFC 193 just months earlier, nothing about the loss itself. Love him or hate him, Conor faced the media, owned it, and moved forward, and that happening so close to Ronda disappearing after the Holm loss definitely did not help her case at the time. Everyone is allowed to handle defeat differently, but Ronda blaming the pushback on the idea that, “The second you are not on top, you are not sh*t, you never were sh*t,” does not match what actually played out. Truly selfless stuff from Ronda Rousey‼️ Ronda said she agreed to fight Gina Carano after seeing Gina do an interview where “she didn’t look good. She gained an unhealthy amount of weight and my first thought was ‘OMG, what can I do to help?’” She also said Gina “is the one girl in MMA that doesn’t owe me a damn thing, and that I owe immensely.’” Ronda added that, based on her own experience, when she was “depressed and gave up on the world and gave up on myself, what I needed was a goal to reignite my passion again”…and she believes Gina needs that same kind of goal now and believes the fight is that.

One of the most bizarre mistakes in UFC history, and one that has always stuck with me. The first flyweight fight in UFC history. Demetrious “ Mighty Mouse” Johnson vs. Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall. The semifinal of the tournament that would crown the inaugural UFC flyweight champion. One hell of a fight that should have gone to a sudden-death 4th round under this tournament’s rules, a format the UFC has never used exactly like this before or since. The Sydney crowd would’ve erupted for a sudden-death round. It had every ingredient of an unforgettable UFC moment, and a simple math mistake erased it. Also delaying the entire tournament for months. But here’s why this clip has always stuck with me. After receiving the corrected scorecards backstage, Dana White personally went to speak with both fighters to deliver the news. He made sure DJ and McCall knew how much he appreciated the fight they’d just put on, and told each of them they’d earned Fight of the Night. Furious at the mistake. Respectful to the fighters. Understanding of how frustrating the situation was for DJ and bizarre for Ian. To me, it’s one of the best examples of Dana at his absolute best. Will always be one of the wildest mistakes in UFC history, and forever a massive “what if” moment.

You may never witness another five minutes like this in MMA history. Every second of it—earned. These five minutes of Dustin Poirier walking out of the cage one final time, to a Louisiana crowd that hadn’t moved, surrounded by family, fellow fighters, pro athletes, executives, and others waiting to congratulate him—were earned with blood, heartbreak, grit, and an unbreakable will. This wasn’t just a retirement. It was a celebration of a man who gave everything to this sport of MMA. Every ounce of himself. Every piece of his soul. He never chose the easy path. He walked through fire every time. Wins or losses—Dustin Poirier always showed up. Always real. Always game. Always himself. He leaves behind a legacy bigger than belts. He leaves as the epitome of what it means to be a fighter. Respect isn’t given in this sport. It’s earned. And Dustin Poirier earned every second of it. Few retirements in MMA leave behind a scene like this. A moment where time stood still, and the sport gave its thanks. Respect 🫡

Dana White says being a UFC fighter “isn’t a job” or a “career,” but an opportunity to get famous and “make as much money as you can possibly make.” Essentially admitting the real money isn’t coming in the octagon. The UFC gives you a platform, and you’re expected to use fame to make the money elsewhere. And Dana has already talked about how rare that actually is when speaking about Conor: “Everybody else has to make all their money in fighting…nobody has done it outside of the octagon or ring at the level Conor McGregor has.” So the message is simple: Use the UFC to get famous, because fighting won’t make you rich. Be like Conor, the one guy who got bigger than the brand, which the UFC has been cautious in never letting that happen again. Sounds like quite the opportunity.
