#Update: Two 🇺🇸 V-22 Ospreys and a C-130J Super Hercules arrived in Berbera, underscoring the strategic value of Somaliland’s airbase and port near the Bab el-Mandeb choke-point linking the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. With hundreds of ships transiting the corridor monthly and over 100 Houthi attacks on merchant vessels recorded in late 2023–early 2024, maritime security has become critical. Against this backdrop, Somaliland is finalising talks with Israel, the United States and the UAE to lease Berbera’s airport and port to help safeguard shipping along the Gulf of Aden.

#Update: Ethiopia Unveils a $12.5 Billion Mega Airport Set to Become Africa’s Largest Aviation Hub. Ethiopia has officially launched the construction of what is described as Africa’s largest airport, with Abiy Ahmed presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony in Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa. The multi-billion-dollar project, estimated at around $12.5 billion, is designed to ease congestion at Bole International Airport and cement Ethiopia’s position as a leading aviation hub on the continent. Once completed, the new Bishoftu International Airport is expected to handle up to 110 million passengers annually, making it one of the largest airports in the world. Ethiopian officials have framed the project as a cornerstone of the country’s long-term economic and transport strategy, with construction expected to run into the next decade. daniel berhane @AbelAbateD @TewodrosTsegay yonasbiru hermela aregawi Zemedeneh Negatu Hannaa Abdisa Tarekegn Bululta Godana Somalilanders African Index Conflict Zone Rashid Abdi Tseday #HornOfAfrica #RedSea #Geopolitics #Somaliland #Israel #Ethiopia

#BREAKING: Somaliland Plunged into Uncertainty as New Rebel Group Appears. A newly-formed rebel group has surfaced in Somaliland, accusing the current administration of fueling tensions and deliberately stoking unrest. The rebels declared that its mobilisation was triggered by what it described as the dehumanising and degrading treatment inflicted on Somaliland’s former president, who was violently attacked as he attempted to enter the airport in Hargeisa for a scheduled trip to the UAE. According to their statement, the former president was publicly humiliated, manhandled, and compelled to walk nearly a kilometre to the airport, an act they say epitomises the administration’s escalating repression against their community.

#BREAKING: A newly surfaced video reveals that the Eritrean regime is training fringe and renegade elements of the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) in Sudan. #Update: The Djibouti–Ethiopia trade corridor, the primary gateway for as much as 90 percent of Ethiopia’s commerce, carries an estimated $30 billion to $40 billion in goods each year, underscoring its central role in the region’s economy. Within that network, the electrified railway linking Addis Ababa to the Port of Djibouti handles a smaller but growing share — roughly 15 percent — moving goods valued at about $3 billion to $6 billion annually. That translates to approximately $250 million to $500 million a month, or $8 million to $16 million each day, based on current freight volumes. While trucking still dominates the corridor, analysts say the railway’s contribution is expected to rise significantly as capacity expands, potentially reshaping the flow of trade across the Horn of Africa.

#Update: Why did Reuters amplify unverified allegations of an RSF training camp inside Ethiopia—claims lacking substantial corroboration—while overlooking documented evidence of a TPLF training facility in Sudan’s Gedaref region near the Ethiopian border? Videos released by TPLF fighters themselves, alongside matching satellite imagery, point to a structured camp reportedly established in 2021 with alleged SAF logistical backing. The omission of this material evidence, contrasted with the prominence given to unsubstantiated claims about Ethiopia, leaves a conspicuous imbalance in the narrative.

#NAIROBI: Organised criminal gangs of Somalian origin have been sexually assaulting young Kenyan 🇰🇪 women in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi, exposing a deepening breakdown of law and order in the area. The surge in criminal violence has been fuelled by reckless ethnic incitement from the notorious Dadaab MP Farah Maalim, who has publicly urged Somalians in Nairobi to “stand up” against Kikuyus and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Critics say such dangerous rhetoric has emboldened criminal gangs, inflamed ethnic tensions, and directly undermined public safety—putting innocent women at risk.

#BREAKING: To prevent a purported Israeli military base in the Gulf of Aden, the Somalian administration is openly preparing to invade Somaliland. In an interview with Al-Arabiya, the Somalian president admitted that military action against Somaliland is under active consideration. Within hours, the abandoned gravel airstrip at Las’anod—a rebel-held town in Somaliland’s Sool region—was rushed into paving, signalling operational preparation, not political rhetoric. Following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, foreign governments reportedly urged Muqdishu to launch an assault from Las’anod into Somaliland. The sudden militarisation of this civilian airstrip points to state-sponsored aggression and proxy warfare, using insurgent-controlled territory to violate Somaliland’s sovereignty and international aviation norms. Las’anod had no strategic relevance prior to this escalation—only a neglected dirt strip in an unstable, militia-dominated area. Its rapid conversion now exposes a premeditated plan to airlift troops for an unlawful attack, risking regional destabilisation and breaching fundamental principles of international law. The current AU head, a former long-serving Djiboutian foreign minister, stated on record that when the Houthis first began attacking merchant vessels in the Red Sea, Djiboutian regime didn’t condemned the strikes. Instead, he acknowledged a silent endorsement, justifying the attacks on the grounds that the Houthis were acting in support of their Palestinian “brothers.” He further implied that Houthi assaults on Red Sea shipping constituted legitimate targets—an alarming stance for the leader of a continental body mandated to uphold peace, stability, and respect for international law. It is deeply concerning that the Chairperson of the African Union would make such remarks, effectively legitimising the actions of a terrorist organisation that is disrupting international trade and threatening global maritime security.
