VANDE BHARAT: At 100 kmph on the world's highest railway bridge The Vande Bharat train has, for the first time, operated at a speed of nearly 100 kmph on the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, following the Railway Ministry’s approval to increase the maximum permissible speed on the Katra-Banihal rail section. The approval allows trains to run at speeds of up to 100 kmph on the 111-kilometre-long new broad gauge rail section between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Banihal under the Jammu Division of Northern Railway. Earlier, the permissible speed was 85 kmph on the Katra-Sangaldan section and 75 kmph on the Sangaldan-Banihal section. With this approval, this special train is expected to cover the travel time between J&K's capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar in around three and a half hours.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah's death on 8 September 1982 at his residence, 10 Maulana Azad Road, in Srinagar brought a pall of gloom over the entire Kashmir Valley. While the Valley mourned his death for several days, over 10 lakh (1 million) Kashmiris participated in his historic funeral procession on the 10th of September. It took the cortege about 10 hours to reach his burial place at Hazratbal. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi walked some distance with the procession in the morning. She reached Hazratbal in a Shikara in the evening along with her spiritual guru Dhirendra Brahmachari and former Jammu & Kashmir governor LK Jha to attend Sheikh's last rites. Lt General SP Malhotra, army commander, Northern Command, led the procession and the muffled drums played the funeral march. The body of the Sheikh was buried under tonnes of flowers showered on it all along the route. The streets of Srinagar awoke early to the cries of mourners. Huge throngs had taken a vantage points for a last glimpse of their beloved leader. The 12-km route was packed with people sitting on rooftops, trees and electric poles long before the procession had started from Polo Ground where his body had lain in state for over 24 hours. Accompanying the procession were large number of dignitaries including Union home minister PC Sethi, law minister Jagan Nath Kaushal, Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar, governors and chief ministers including the governor of Jammu & Kashmir BK Nehru, large number of members of Parliament, Opposition leaders including Chandra Shekhar of Janata Party, Atal Bihari Vajpayee of Bharatiya Janata Party, HN Bahuguna, Chanderjeet Yadav, foreign diplomats, and large number of his friends and associates.

Srinagar fully sold out. This time not for cheap. No room available at any hotel, any houseboat. Hotels, houseboats, Shikaras, taxis... all have raised rates 500% to 1000%. The 1.5 km drive from Dalgate to Nehru Park is now a 40-minute drive due to permanent traffic jam, huge tourist rush and the successive Governments' lack of will to widen Boulevard to a 4-lane road.

BREAKING HERE As a big boon to the people of Kashmir, as also to the tourists, traders and other commuters, MORTHINDIA NHAI will be throwing open the Gallandar (Pampore)-Narbal section of the Srinagar Ring Road for traffic in a few days-- bypassing all towns and markets, including Srinagar and reducing the current travel time of 50-60 minutes to just 25 minutes for the people driving south to north and vice versa. Traffic to and from Uri, Baramulla, Sopore, Gulmarg, Kupwara, Jammu, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Tral, Pulwama and Pampore will now pass hassle-free and without any jamming through Suthsu, Chadoura, Panzan, Ichigam, Budgam, Daharmuna Soibug and Narbal. NC's rebel MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi holds Chief Minister's Advisor Nasir Sogami responsible for most of the wrongs in National Conference and its Government in Jammu and Kashmir. According to him, none other than Nasir was responsible for Omar Abdullah's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 in North Kashmir and the same was the party's conclusion. He said that Chief Minister handled the Reservation file nonchalantly but got the file for his Advisor's Cabinet status approved with "begging" from the Union Home Minister. Aga also alleged that Nasir clandestinely played a sectarian card as he himself wanted to be NC's candidate after Omar Abdullah's resignation in the Budgam Assembly by-elections in November 2025. ![Enjoyed the first post-2018 media community interaction, followed by dinner, with the J&K PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti at Hotel Lalit Srinagar The LaLiT Hotels, Palaces & Resorts tonight. It proved an opportunity to meet and interact with some of our longtime colleagues as we have met rarely after 2019. This was my first as I missed her previous one because of being in Jammu. Thank you Madam for remembering and inviting to this grand feast on occasion of your completing 30 years in politics. Mehbooba ji in her brief speech mentioned my 1994 colleagues of Kashmir Times-- photographer Abdul Qayoom and bureau chief Zahoor Malik as also myself as Kashmir bureau chief of Daily Excelsior in 1995, undoubtedly our most difficult times. Later, in a conversation with me she went nostalgic when she recollected her first interview with me as the Congress MLA of Bijbehara for Daily Excelsior. She recollected and narrated when she proposed and stressed on the opening of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Road [I remember she said Srinagar-Rawalpindi Road] in the same interview in 1997. She recollected how Mufti Sahab got angry over her statement, saying that it would not be tolerated by Delhi. On his return from Germany, National Conference's rebel MP from Central Kashmir Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi gets a warm reception from his supporters in his hometown of Budgam. Their only slogans..."Ruhullah Ruhullah". In his address to the gathering, Aga Ruhullah revealed that when he was asked (by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Working Committee meeting of JKNC ) to resign and contest as MLA from Budgam, he lost no time to offer his resignation. "I just remained silent (in the Budgam by-election campaign and the result is before you. Don't compel me to campaign against you in future", Aga Ruhullah challenged the Chief Minister and the NC leadership.

Ex-bureaucrat Khurshid Ahmed Ganai says that the National Conference Government in Jammu and Kashmir must boldly and immediately remove the "injustice to Open Merit candidates" which has crippled their prospects in Government jobs and scholarship, particularly in their entry to the J&K Administrative Services. With the Indian national flag fluttering on his bicycle, this lonely 29-year-old cyclist Parvaiz Ahmad Lachi from Divar Lolab in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, on Tuesday set out on a 9-month bicycle journey to Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah pilgrimage. He is seen cycling his spiritual odyssey without any fear, without any security on Kashmir’s Baramulla highway-- on way to Jammu and further to Delhi. He is reportedly going to pass through 12 countries and has secured visas for Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with a target to cross into Kazakhstan by September 1, 2026. However, it's not immediately clear if he is also planning to travel with the Indian tricolor through Pakistan and Afghanistan. And our Z-plus leaders in Kashmir call it "Qabristan Ki Khamoshi" (silence of the graveyard), claiming that there's nobody to shoulder the Indian flag in Kashmir! Just mention this and they will label you "an Indian propagandist".
