During a 1993 performance in Stockholm, Sweden, Layne struck a man upon seeing him assault fans and gesture with a Nazi symbol in the crowd. Layne stopped the performance and called the man to the stage, greeting him with a right hand punch. The fan was ejected from the concert and immediately filed a complaint with police. The officers went after Staley, but the show was over and the singer had taken a ferry to Finland, Alice in Chains' next stop. The remaining members of the band had not yet left Stockholm and were located by police, who seized the musicians' passports until Layne returned. Authorities investigated the case and not only were the members of Alice in Chains released, but Staley received a formal compliment from the police.
