⭕️ We are Banyamulenge. We are Tutsi. We are of Banyarwanda ancestry, and we are Congolese. None of these identities contradicts the others. The name Banyamulenge was never intended to erase or deny our origins. Before the name became widely used, our community was commonly identified as Banyarwanda, Tutsi, or Tutsi-Banyarwanda of South Kivu. Becoming known as Banyamulenge did not create a new ethnicity, nor did it erase the history and ancestry that existed before the name. ⭕️The name Banyamulenge acquired an important territorial and political meaning because it helped distinguish Congolese Tutsi-Banyarwanda families who had lived in Congo for generations from Tutsi refugees who arrived from Rwanda, particularly following the upheavals beginning in 1959. Identifying ourselves as Banyamulenge was a way of saying: we are from here; we have deep roots and a distinct history in South Kivu; we are not newly arrived refugees. It was an affirmation of our Congolese belonging, not a rejection of our ancestry or our Tutsi identity. ⭕️That is why saying, “I am Banyamulenge, therefore I am not Tutsi and have no historical connection to Banyarwanda,” amounts to denying part of our own history. We do not need to deny our ancestry to prove our Congolese nationality. Colonial borders did not erase the peoples, languages, cultures, and histories that existed before those borders were drawn. Being Tutsi, speaking Kinyarwanda, and having historical roots connected to Rwanda does not make us citizens of Rwanda today. Ancestry and nationality are not the same thing. ⭕️ In that sense, the Banyamulenge identity itself represented an ideology of self-preservation—Twirwaneho—long before Twirwaneho became an organization. It asserted our existence, our history, and our right to belong in Congo without requiring us to deny who we are. We are Banyamulenge because of the distinct community and history we built in South Kivu; we are Tutsi by ethnicity and heritage; we are of Banyarwanda ancestry; and we are Congolese by nationality and generations of belonging. The name Banyamulenge was never meant to erase where we came from—it affirmed where we belong. Both of these elders are stating historical facts, and correct. Tito Rutaremara Cc: Monsieur Gapangwa!
