Today, according to the Eastern calendar, #Alawites mark Eid al-Barbara and light the fire of al-Qozleh, despite massacres, persecution, and ongoing fear. This does not mean normalization with the current reality, nor does it mean Alawites are safe. It is not celebration over pain. Historically, Alawites did not practice rituals publicly. Silence was a survival instinct. But years of oppression, forced erasure, and attempts to reshape Alawite identity have pushed the community to do the opposite: to exist visibly. Lighting this fire is not defiance for show. It is a quiet statement of identity. It says: we are still here. Not because life is easy, but because disappearance is no longer an option.
