Client: “Yeah, I think we want to go labor only to save a few bucks, we can grab material” Contractor: “No problem. While you’re out can you basically start your own business to provide everything else we need to get your job done since we’re labor only?” Client: “Uhhhhh…”

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Watching masters at their craft never gets old.

Build furniture from oak. Stick it in an ammonia chamber. Give it a few hours. The tannins in the wood react with the ammonia and the longer you leave it in there can take the color from brown, to grey, to black. Finish it with some wax and you’re good to go.

If you own a Home Services business and you’re pricing by the hour STOP. In home services there is a pricing paradox that occurs when quoting a job for a customer. Customers want the work performed to high quality standards and also done in a timely manner. Often as quickly as possible. Signaling that they value time. However, the second a plumber, electrician, HVAC contractor, etc gets the work done in less time that the customer anticipated, they have a problem with the price. Assuming they should be charged less because it took less time. That’s now how things work. You’re paying for experience and craftsmanship not an hourly rate. Contractors should be incentivized to maximize adding value to their customers. Not drag things out (or cut corners) because they need to hit a labor target. You’re holding back your talented team who could get the job done more efficiently if they were incentivized properly. You’re also backing yourself into a corner with customers by anchoring them with a labor allowance. Price by the job not the hour.

This guy is an absolute wizard with transmissions. It’s fun to watch his tear down videos and explanations. I can’t help but wonder if he’s under charging at $1,000 for a total rebuild. What does the business side of you think and what does the customer side of you think?

Looking at a new house to buy? Follow the cracks in the street, up the driveway, through the garage, and into the home to tell the story of how the ground moves throughout the property. It may manage your expectations or reveal major red flags before making an offer.

My truck used to cost $35 to have washed. Now it’s $65 + tip at my local Waterway. The do exterior, wheels and interior. As a result, i’ve started washing it myself. Which has me thinking… Is washing your own car a poor man’s task or something to take pride in?
