If you read my post about finding the goodness in loss or hard moments I said I would share this video. My husband Doug has been at the top of this sport. He has won a state title, a NCAA title, the US Open, World Team trials, placed 5th at the world, and was an Olympian. Through all that he has experienced his fair share of losses and getting through them. Our son participated in his first HS state tournament and although he came up short taking home 2nd, Doug did not have a lack of words to share with other parents who have or will go through it from his new perspective of a parent of a HS athlete. So much goodness packed into this. I challenge every parent to watch it, especially those with kids in some sort of even/sport that they compete in. Doug not only talks about validating your child's feelings because of the work it took to get there, but he speaks to the things he as an athlete experienced just now from the perspective of a parent of a High School kid. By far this is one of his best talks and knowing how his heart hurt for his kid, while probably tuning back into some of his own losses made this even more relatable. I know one thing- I'm lucky that our kids, both our own and the ones that will be joining us at UNI eventually have someone like him under the tunnel in these moments. Although my heart ached matside and I was probably 30 yards from my kid in one of his most vulnerable and defeating moments, I knew he didn't need me, he needed him. Doug Schwab

I’ve saved this clip from 2024. Maybe you’re a parent that needs to hear it now and maybe you’re a parent that needs to bookmark it for later to come back to. Either way if you have watched your child sacrifice the norms to not be of the norm and watched them fall short you can relate. For those that aren’t at this level yet- remember every match/game/point is big to them in moment and I think we minimize that thinking we are helping them when in reality we are protecting our own self from the hurt we feel when our child is hurting. Struggle and failure are life’s biggest teaching tools. They are also some of the most painful to go through, but more so to watch someone you love go through. I hope this helps some parents- now or in the future or even those parents of kids at the younger ages. Hopefully you focus on building healthy relationships with your kids over their win loss record. Hopefully you are praising them not only in their successes, but also in their failures of trying so they continue to just that- try.

Do you taste test the fountain Mountain Dew® before you order 😂😂 His disgust when he thought he may bring him diet 😂😂😂 Also this is our first time out alone in a while. Both of us had just left work and I asked the sitter to stay a little longer… Season is upon us, for us wives seeing our spouses : if you’re gonna find a way some days you have to make a way… Money spent on a sitter to sit across from each other and share life uninterrupted for even just an hour is worth it always. Can’t afford a sitter? Have an indoor picnic after the kids go to bed. The longer we go without investing in our marriage or spending time together the easier it is to start to function like roommates vs teammates. Do the work. Make the time. 🤟🏻

Doug ( Doug Schwab) is one of the best examples of you can do everything right and still not get what you want. A lot of the guys stepping out there this weekend feel this. This is why this sport is Brutiful. It’s beautiful in the aspect of teaching you some of life’s best lessons and it’s brutal in the aspect of a small percentage will feel they achieved what they set out to do. So to those out there chasing down a goal, stepping out on the mat, putting in countless hours and sacrificing their time, body, family and other things to just have the CHANCE to be that small percentage, knowing there’s a bigger chance they won’t be, I am forever inspired by you. #takedownsandtimeouts #usopen #wrestling 🎥: Matside Media 🎥

Built a little backdrop with some help and I’m so proud of it. We may not have a full media set to walk into for photos like most big schools, but we have something that is personal and created with our past, present, and future in mind. Loved this Audio because we do only have one life so why not make things a little extra special. For the recruits it’s a memory, for our guys hopefully it’s another example of how ( to quote my son), “ Big time isn’t a place, it’s a mindset.” and to me this set is pretty big time 😍
