Sinéad’s daughter, Roísín Waters, singing “Nothing Compares 2 U” at Carnegie Hall last night in tribute to her mum. Oh man…I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. Every other performer was crammed side of stage to watch this bittersweet majesty unfold. And my god, could you feel the power of musical alchemy in the hall last night. The soaring sharp needle of sung and played notes that tear us asunder and stitch us back together. The way it isn’t about any one thing. The way music can communicate more than mere words ever can. There was so much packed into this one glorious night, and I’m getting on a plane to head to Texas (Godspeed me) for the start of Dresden Dolls tour in Austin tomorrow so I’m scrambling but I’ll do what I can.

A clip from BBC Newsnight. The question itself - “How do YOU think Sinéad O’Connor should be remembered?” - broke my heart and is such a painful example of how it all works (and doesn’t work at all). Ask yourself: would this question have been asked had she been a man? I tried.
