Infrastructure creates economic opportunities, but responsibility gives business its deeper purpose. That was the larger message behind Jeffrey Sachs's observations about the Adani Group. Speaking at the World Symposium on Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges, Jeffrey Sachs, President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), recognised Adani as a significant contributor to India's infrastructure expansion and its rapid growth as the world's fastest-growing major economy. He also examined the significance of the Adani family name, contrasting it with SpaceX, Amazon, Meta and Google. Referring to Dr Adani's remarks, Sachs spoke about the family's continuing question: what are we giving back to society? His comparisons with a third-generation Italian pharmaceutical company and the third-generation Illy coffee company showed how family businesses can carry values across three or four generations. For the Adani Group, as for every business, the responsibility is larger than generating financial returns. Where profits come from, the risks undertaken and the costs borne by others matter. Sachs described business as both an economic and a moral entity, an understanding that society needs to rediscover through deeper wisdom.
