Our advocates are headed to Capitol Hill this morning to ask their elected representatives to fund the #HEARTSAct. Congress unanimously passed the HEARTS Act, which creates a grant program to equip schools nationwide to respond to a cardiac emergency. Funding the HEARTS Act will enable schools to buy AEDs, develop cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs) and increase CPR and AED training. Up to 23,000 U.S. kids experience cardiac arrest each year, with student athletes at a greater risk. In schools with AEDs, 70 percent of kids survive cardiac arrest. That’s seven times the overall survival rate for kids.
