Eighteen years of age. Perhaps only one season in the Mayo jersey. (Move to AFL shortly) On his arm, he wrote two words: "One Chance”

If you’re watching for attitude and effort, this is the clip. The outcome is largely secure. And still, Robert Baloucoune covers the width of the pitch to make a try-saving tackle. That tells you something. Scoreboard comfort doesn’t change standards. Effort doesn’t fluctuate with circumstance. Habits don’t relax because pressure has eased. This wasn’t about the moment. It was about identity. That’s a team that goes after effort. Effort is a choice. And Ireland chose it. Standards are most visible when they’re no longer required. … and then reach down and pick your teammate up

When asked at St Kilda what his favourite song is, he said The Swell by Amble. When I listened to it, these few lines stayed with me. They somehow seem to reflect the humble, thoughtful and grateful young athlete he comes across as, beginning a remarkable journey in Melbourne.

A listen to some great advice In psychology and organisational behaviour it's linked to: Social loafing → when individuals in a group put in less effort because they assume others will pick up the slack. Bystander effect → when responsibility gets diluted across many people, leading to inaction. "Somebody else will do it" bias - a mindset where accountability gets blurred. That's why the Ryder Cup captains will remind players that everyone has to finish their own job, no matter the scoreboard

watch this back and it’s easy to miss it first time. Ball breaks, Cork lose it… and straight away you’re thinking Limerick are gone here. Then you see Mark Coleman, out on the edge of it, not even central to the play. Next thing, his hurley is gone. Most lads are out at that point. Hand goes up, look for the free… play moves on. Not him. He stays in it. Hayes comes through with the ball, proper momentum, Limerick building and Coleman, with no hurley, just commits. Full shoulder. Stops him dead or near enough that the ball has to go. That’s the first bit. Ball moves again Lynch into Nash and again, most players are gone. Phase has moved, you’ve done your bit. Not him. Back in. No panic. No diving in. Just gets goal side, stands Nash up and holds him there… and suddenly what looked like a Limerick attack turns into three Cork jerseys around him. It’s not about winning the ball. It’s not even about the big moment. It’s the will to stay in the play when you’ve every reason to be out of it. Lost possession. No hurley. Ball gone past you. Doesn’t matter. He goes again… and again… and again until the game bends back his way. That’s the standard. Not the highlight. Not the score. That. Staying in it when you’ve no right

That’s not just a tackle — that’s attitude, effort, will. Not every moment screams skill — some whisper it in effort. A chase. A reach. A flick. Not for glory — but for the team. That’s what wanting it more looks like. It takes something deeper to dig in, to chase back, to get that flick. It’s workrate. It’s will. It’s a mindset. And it’s everything.

Nicky Quaid made an outstanding save, rose slowly to his feet rather than celebrating or showing emotion, immediately went back into problem-solving mode. He glanced around at his defenders paused for a moment as if gathering his thoughts delivered a few calm words #leadership

Paul Geaney’s leadership today was a template for every player. In the swell of the Bars’ surge, he stood up and asked for the ball. Took his goal with certainty, took his knocks without pause. Patched up, back on, and never once hid from the moment. A leader in the truest sense, present, persistent, unshakeable.

Pat Gilroy (2011) Liam Sheedy (2019) Mayo (2026) Different teams. Different codes. Different generations. Same message. Building a team that tackles together takes a culture that is reinforced every day. If not, teams naturally drift towards the visible: scores, skills & tactics

The scoreboard records the point. The game remembers the work. Two legal shoulder-to-shoulder hits. Relentless pressure. Refusal to let the carrier break the line. That defensive effort creates the turnover. The turnover creates the pass. The pass creates the score. The forward who pops it over knows the truth, that’s why he points back. Because inside good teams, players recognise: Scores often belong to the worker, not the shooter.

"You can be the best player in the world with the ball, yet still fail to reach your full potential if you neglect your game out of possession." .. “He scored 25 points that day but let in 14 until you find a reason for yourself to want to make that Tackle, you need a reason, only then you can be the best player you can be”
