Most school leaders believe cell phones undermine academic performance, mental health and student attention. And while many schools have put into place policies to restrict cell phone use, they’ve done so without adequate evidence of what actually works. The current research on cell phone policies is limited and inconclusive, relying on small sample sizes and cross-sectional data. That’s why I’m proud to share that today, in collaboration with economists Matt Gentzkow and Hunt Allcott, I’m launching #PhonesInFocus, a campaign to gather information from public school leaders and educators about school cell phone policies and their impact on student achievement and well-being and to ultimately shape a set of evidence-based recommendations for the future. Read a press release to learn more: A key part of this campaign is a 5-minute survey, which is now live at All public school teachers, principals and other school staff are invited to take the survey. All participants will be entered to win a variety of prizes. It’s time to let data—not just debate—guide this critical conversation. Help us spread the word!
