If people didn't tell me to learn Spanish, I wouldn't have. It's still not perfect and I still have a funny accent, yet after a few years of trying I am able to hold conversations. How come I was told to speak the language or else I wasn't apart of the culture, yet when Americans do it it's considered cruel or offensive? Why are we told to be ashamed to defend our traditions, values, and culture? Isn't it a great thing to encourage and expect participation in our customs, especially when they are the greatest and most powerful in the world? How come being proud Americans willing to defend our identities and communities from LITERAL takeovers means we should be called (all the names people without profile pictures or masked up cowards on the street call us)? MAKE ENGLISH CULTURALLY ENFORCED AGAIN!! Believe me I cried out of isolation, I felt socially awkward, my face turned bright red when someone asked me something in groups, I struggled to order food at restaurants etc... yet because of that struggle i learned the language. I know the frustration of not being able to "be yourself" in a new language. Yet, removing that struggle for immigrants telling them there's no rush to learn english keeps them in an outcast position. Why not TRY to speak english and LEARN how we do things... or else why are they HERE specifically? Isn't that the whole point of going to a new country? to embrace it? Why change what has worked so wonderfully well for the last 250 years?! If its working keep doing that, if its not change it. They came here because it wasn't working back home, therefore there is 0 incentive to adapt to their ways of being. PERIOD.
