I was shocked to see this video that is spreading quickly on social media. This is the reserved forest of Khalanga in #Dehradun and the video is courtesy Ms Deepshikha Rawat Verma. The person in the white T shirt says that he is a contractor and Ashok Agarwal of Rishikesh is the owner of 40 bighas in this reserved forest. When you see the video, you will notice a very prominent gate that has been put in the reserved forest. For information, I have spoken to the Head of Forest Force, Govt of Uttarakhand this evening and requested that their department look into this. I hope that we get to know quickly what's really going on in this case. If I hear something crucial, I will surely share with you!

The menace of wrong side driving has surged rapidly in recent years in #Dehradun and elsewhere. While this was earlier limited to neighbourhoods and outer areas, lax enforcement has emboldened errant drivers of two wheelers and cars to break all boundaries. In this video that has now gone viral; we can see this brazen act of wrong side driving on a flyover of all places and that too in the middle and not on the other side of the lane. I hope that the Doon Police and Uttarakhand Police are making a note and taking a firm stand on such issues of road safety, traffic management and blatant rule violations. The only solution to the traffic mess on the Dehradun side of the Expressway is to make a Mega Parking in Ganeshpur with 5000 cars and provide facilities for tourists & travellers. The tourist or local should not be made to rot with the promise of 2.5 hours on the Delhi Dehradun Expressway during weekends. Do watch and share this solution oriented video for idea dissemination and discussion. Thank you! I ask Uttarakhand Police to permanently stop this unnecessary sound pollution for the so-called VIP movement. Why are you blaring your horns when the traffic is at a standstill? This boorish behaviour is unacceptable. This must be immediately discontinued!

Once upon a time #Uttarakhand was known for its jal, jungle and jameen; not anymore. Hardly a day or two passes before some video or the other from #Dehradun or some other district does not go viral in the state. In this recent video, we are being informed that this is the area of Maldevta in the outskirts of Dehradun. It's a short clip of less than a minute and I would like to both request and encourage you to see it fully. The one who has made the video is giving details about the location, the sorry state of the river, the upcoming resort and ongoing plotting, the lack of supervision and the presence of bhu mafia. The narrator ends with the painful and usual refrain of how the state is going to the dogs. I don't usually like to tag people and particularly the CM of our state Pushkar Singh Dhami but I do make some exceptions sometimes. In this particular case, I not only request but also ask Mr. Chief Minister to look into this. It's equally important to question why so many violations are happening in our state and that too so rapidly. Just last week we saw the audacious attempt to literally hijack the reserved forest of #Khalanga in Dehradun by a Rishikesh based builder. If you need regulatory support from @bypadavbjp or MoEF&CC; I am sure they will lend a helping hand. As a nation how can we aspire to become a super power if any tom, dick and harry can have the courage to simply walk in and trample across our sacred land, forests and rivers. I want to close by saying that these "dacoits of environment" who are defiling the pure and pious soul of Uttarakhand need to be taught a harsh lesson. If I were you, I would show these people the might of the state and ensure that not an inch of our state owned land would be raped and plundered. I feel terribly sad to be writing this knowing well that in all probability you will never even get this message, and even if you do - and this is likely worse - nothing will happen!

Absolutely devastated to know how a mother and a father who is a soldier, and their family lost their 1.5-year-old son in #Uttarakhand after being forced to rush between 5 hospitals due to a failed referral and ambulance system. This is not a tragedy, its a hugely broken insensitive system in shambles. All this talk of doubling GDP, growing the economy, building expressways is absolutely meaningless if we cannot protect our own citizens, and cannot provide even basic ambulance services to those who need them the most. Just two weeks ago, renowned folks singer Ganesh Martolia lost his sister and grandmother from Munsiyari the same way, denied timely care due to a crumbling health referral and inadequate transport system. On a personal note, this hurts me deeply. As someone who has worked very closely in public health and emergency care in Uttarakhand, I know how many of these deaths are avoidable. Our public health system is not only failing but in one way or the other is party to this very callousness that takes the lives of our own citizens. PS : Uttarakhand CM Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed regret over this most unfortunate death of a toddler late last evening. While I appreciate the fact that he has spoken about this issue and asked the Kumaon Commissioner to conduct an enquiry; the rot in the widely prevalent referral system in public health establishments across Uttarakhand needs to be checked, curbed and corrected. This can only happen when the healthcare system is ready to accept its shortcomings and prepared to transform its working methods and processes. On another note, for everyone who is to be referred to another hospital in the hills, isn't it better to straight away direct them to come to come to Haldwani or Dehradun to save time? Why ask the patients and their families to run from one hospital/town to another before succumbing to their injuries or ailments as in the above case where the family had to go to 5 hospitals? As a constructive suggestion, I would like to urge Shri Dhami to consider dramatically strengthening private ambulance services in Uttarakhand. I have a few suggestions that I will be sharing with the Chief Ministers Office in the coming days. Its vital to consider that if we cant fix our hospitals right, the least we can do is to create a massive network of functional ambulance services across the length and breadth of the state. Cracks Tearing Through Totaghati, Major Geological Threat Looms in #Uttarakhand: Before you start reading this post, here are a few important points to set some context. A. Totaghati is a critical stretch on the #Rishikesh–#Badrinath National Highway (NH-7) in Uttarakhand. It is considered one of the most challenging and sensitive parts of the #CharDhamYatra route and lies about 40 Kilometers from Rishikesh. B. The expert explaining the Totaghti situation in the video is one of the most well respected geologists of our state. His name is Prof. MPS Bisht and he is in conversation with Shri Ramesh Bhatt of Devbhoomi Dialogue. C. The video is recent, recorded in the aftermath of the August 5, 2025 #Dharali tragedy in #Uttarkashi. Now let's talk about the issue: A significant geological threat is looming over Totaghati,. Known for its narrow roads, sharp curves, and rocky terrain for decades, Totaghati is now emerging as a major challenge for the national highway due to the appearance of large cracks and fractures on the mountain rocks. Experts warn that if these cracks continue to widen, an entire section of the mountain may collapse, potentially cutting off access to Badrinath, #Kedarnath, and large parts of the #Garhwal region from Rishikesh. Senior geologist Prof. MPS Bisht, who has been studying the hills and internal structures of Uttarakhand for the past three/four decades has informed us all that multiple significant fractures have been discovered during the past few months of monitoring the rock formations in Totaghati. According to Prof. Bisht, the rocks in this area are made of limestone, which naturally develop fractures and clints (deep fissures) over time. He has issued a warning that the situation in Totaghati could pose a devastating blow, not just for Char Dham pilgrims, but also for the local economy and military transport. His team has been regularly identifying such critical locations and notifying departments including the National Highways Authority of India. Prof. Bisht explained that these cracks are hundreds of meters deep, cutting through the entire mountain, not just the surface. This indicates that the threat lies deep within the internal structure of the mountain. The formation of these cracks at Totaghati is such that if these cracks widen or break, an entire section of the mountain could slide down. I am sharing this important note/video and tagging PMO India NHAI NDMA India | राष्ट्रीय आपदा प्रबंधन प्राधिकरण 🇮🇳 Office Of Nitin Gadkari ADG PI - INDIAN ARMY Uttarakhand DIPR with the hope that in case this has not come to their knowledge/notice; and if they get to see this now; this grim challenge can be escalated and due/necessary action taken on urgency.

In wake of #WayanadLanslide, I again want to draw attention of #Uttarakhand govt to ISRO landslide atlas. Rudraprayag & Tehri dists are most landslide prone dists in India w/ 1st & 2nd rank. Our current model of development is fraught w/ dangers & risks. Caution is need of hour!

I was deeply troubled to see this video on social media this afternoon. For those who may not know, this is from #Syanachatti in #Uttarkashi district in #Uttarakhand. It’s heartbreaking to share that the village of #Dharali, which suffered a devastating tragedy on August 5th is also in the same district. Both places have one thing in common beyond the fury of the 2025 monsoon. They are just about 20 odd kilometers short of the sacred shrines of #Yamunotri and #Gangotri. While Dharali and nearby #Harsil have been struggling for over two weeks with the formation of a lake on the Bhagirathi (Ganga) river, another rain induced landslide has now created a lake along the Yamuna river in the same district. What you see and hear in the video are locals in sheer anguish who are angry, frustrated, and desperate for help. It’s a cry for attention that cannot be ignored by anyone who is humane and sensitive to the suffering and pain of others. At this difficult hour, I stand in solidarity with them and urge the Uttarakhand government, all its #Dehradun based agencies and the district administration to do everything possible to manage this critical situation. While all houses and hotels were evacuated earlier and residents asked to move to higher ground, I am certain that a lot more is being expected from our authorities. With broken roads and the monsoon showing no mercy, things look extremely worrying. My heartfelt prayers for the safety of everyone in Syanachatti and the entire rain battered region. May normalcy return soon. 🙏

Using local knowledge for road widening and landslide prevention in #Uttarakhand : This landslide happened yesterday morning at a location that is around 25 km from #Uttarakashi on way to #Gangotri. I was informed by one of the nation's most well respected scientists and geologist Dr Navin Juyal that they had submitten an alternate DPR to MoRTH in October 2023. They had recommended not to touch the hill side and suggested viyoducted/elevated corridor. But in the DPR of BRO, hill side cutting of 12 meter is proposed. Dr. Juyal goes on to say that this is not a great science of landslide as any local person can inform which slope is stable and which one is prone to instability. Therefore, Dr Juyal suggests that instead of employing a battery of landslide experts, BRO or MoRTH must seriously think of employing local villagers as consultants or local knowledge experts in road widening and construction in the mountain landscape of our state. Dr. Juyal is confident that an approach of this nature would make more than 50 percent roads in Uttrakhand disaster resilient.
