The upcoming Nagaland movie Angh shows how demographic change took place through the influence of Christian missionaries. The story is set in the 1960s and follows Anghva, a Konyak tribal chief, whose son comes under the influence of Christian missionaries and becomes attracted to Christianity and the new faith, leaving behind his tribal culture. It is deeply disheartening to see that Bharatanatyam, which is regarded as the mother of Indian classical dance and has survived for over 2,000 years, is being presented in such a satirical/mocking manner. Ananya Panday cannot even strike a proper posture, let alone master the mudras (hand gestures), bhangas (body positions), and navarasas (facial expressions). On a personal note, it took me five and a half years to learn Odissi from the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre, and yet I still do not consider myself competent enough to perform on a grand stage. And these actresses think that practicing for a mere hour will make them master a tough classical dance form like Bharatanatyam. Shame on you, Ananya Panday.
