This is a remarkable story that most Christians will never hear. How an Iraqi Dominican friar saved thousands of ancient Aramaic manuscripts from ISIS. "Since the arrival of ISIS to Mosul, I felt there was a threat to culture." The Assyro-Chaldean man, Najeeb Michaeel, had a hunch that ISIS was coming to Mosul. Years before in 2007, he received threatening letters arrived at his monastery which each contained a broken cross and a bullet. On the night of August 6, Fr Najeeb loaded cars & trucks with thousands of manuscripts and fled for Erbil. "I felt that providence & heaven were with us... It was like Noah's ark." Because of checkpoint & road closures, he had to ask strangers to help him smuggle the documents on foot. "There was a swarm of Daesh cars with black flags hanging around. I am sorry to post something so graphic. I simply want the world to remember this massacre during the Iraq War. October 31, 2010. Islamist terrorists attacked an Assyro-Chaldean Church during a service in Baghdad. They took hostages. They would soon killed the hostages & blew themselves up. I just want you ponder the reality of the Iraq War & what it did to ancestral Christians. Assyrians are an Old Testament nation that has been in their homeland of Mesopotamia ("Bet Nahrain") for thousands of years. They've been Aramaic-speaking Christians for 2000 years. They contributed to Christianity not just as early Christians, but as the largest non-state missionary operation that took the faith as far as China & Japan. The Iraq war forced a collapse in their population from 1.5 million to less than 200,000 today. One of COUNTLESS massacres that happened during the Iraq War which drove an emigration crisis. Priests & bishops were kidnapped. Nuns were beheaded. Regularly. I am not talking about once or twice. This was a common event from 2002-2011--with a brief pause before the rise of ISIS in Nineveh in 2014. Why does nobody talk about these people? Why are there no international efforts to restore this population to its homeland? To rebuild their churches, to restore the property that they left behind, now occupied by squatters? They care about every genocide except Christian genocide.

A powerful sermon from a young Assyrian girl speaking in Aramaic on The Feast of The Holy Cross. Incredible words from a child living in Iraq where Christians have been persecuted relentlessly. In the language of Jesus, this young girl asks: Would we work as hard to uncover the cross deep within us as humanity did to uncover Christ's physical cross? The Feast commemorates the day Saint Helena, Emperor Constantine's Mother, found the True Cross in Jerusalem. "I ask you: Are we willing to uncover Christ beneath everything buried in our hearts?" If Christ examined our hearts today, what would he find? "A heart that forgives? A heart that bears with everyone and judges no one?" "Or will he find a cross that is hanging on our necks, but far from the way we live our lives?" And she ends with a very powerful statement. We can't fully understand the Bible without the Aramaic language. There are at least 12,000 instances of mistranslation that can only be reconciled through Aramaic. Three examples: 1. The Old Testament speaks of a "Jealous God". When taking the Aramaic, the accurate reading is a "Zealous God". 2. English translations recount Jesus on the cross pleading to The Father: "Why have you forsaken me?". But Jesus spoke in Aramaic, not Greek. What he said in his Aramaic tongue translates to: "For this was my destiny". 3. Paul in Corinthians said the Messiah HAS come, not that the Messiah WILL come. Because of an Aramaic mistranslation, the Greek (and thus English today) versions state that the Messiah *will* come. This has lead to "second coming" interpretations that disappear based on the original Aramaic framing. Aramaic was the spoken tongue of Jesus. The New Testament captures what he spoke aloud in Aramaic. We can't completely understand Christ without his language.
