A lone Armenian Priest at a 9th century monastery. There's something sad about this image. Armenia finds itself in a difficult predicament, again. Chaotic leadership. Sandwiched between Russia, Turkey & Azerbaijan. The world watched as Azerbaijan destroyed ancient Churches.

Persian King Shapur II ordered a 4th century Assyrian Patriach to worship the Zoroastrian Sun god, to which he responded: “I have one soul & it belongs to God Immortal.” Today Assyrians commemorate his death. “Lakhu Maran” is the Aramaic chant he sung walking to his execution.

Assyrian children in Baghdad learning to pray “Lakhu Maran”, a 4th century Aramaic prayer sung under Persian persecution. They are Chaldean Catholics in Communion with Rome. There were once over 500,000 Assyrian Christians in Baghdad and today there may only be 5000 left.

Every Christian should see this monastery one day. Overlooking the Nineveh Plains, it is from 640 AD. The same Old Testament land Jonah walked when he preached to the Assyrians. The same people who still speak Aramaic till this day & custody these ancient holy sites.

An Assyrian Priest chants in Aramaic in front of Pope Francis in 2016. This is Father Seraphim. He leads the Monastery of the Thirteen Holy Assyrian Fathers in Georgia. An extremely rare individual. He is an important figure in the spread of Aramaic into Eastern Orthodoxy.

I am sorry to post something so graphic. I simply want the world to remember this massacre during the Iraq War. October 31, 2010. Islamist terrorists attacked an Assyro-Chaldean Church during a service in Baghdad. They took hostages. They would soon killed the hostages & blew themselves up. I just want you ponder the reality of the Iraq War & what it did to ancestral Christians. Assyrians are an Old Testament nation that has been in their homeland of Mesopotamia ("Bet Nahrain") for thousands of years. They've been Aramaic-speaking Christians for 2000 years. They contributed to Christianity not just as early Christians, but as the largest non-state missionary operation that took the faith as far as China & Japan. The Iraq war forced a collapse in their population from 1.5 million to less than 200,000 today. One of COUNTLESS massacres that happened during the Iraq War which drove an emigration crisis. Priests & bishops were kidnapped. Nuns were beheaded. Regularly. I am not talking about once or twice. This was a common event from 2002-2011--with a brief pause before the rise of ISIS in Nineveh in 2014. Why does nobody talk about these people? Why are there no international efforts to restore this population to its homeland? To rebuild their churches, to restore the property that they left behind, now occupied by squatters? They care about every genocide except Christian genocide.
