One of the things I can literally do all day is watch planes land and take off. I initially wanted to study aeronautical engineering but no school in Nigeria that I knew of then offered it. Think about the Airbus A380 for a minute. It’s 5-story building tall, longer than six standard school buses lined up bumper to bumper, can carry up to 850 passengers and holds 320,000 liters of fuel. Yet, this giant will defy gravity and just take off with ease, as if nature has suspended its laws. And then traverse the skies for hours upon hours, crossing oceans and timezones, before landing on a runway with predictable accuracy. Mind boggling. For centuries, experts thought man could never fly. But some people believed, and persisted, and brick by brick, they laid the foundations that made flight possible. Yes, there’s the law of gravity, but there’s also the law of lift, which can override gravity, thanks to Bernoulli’s principle. Your job is to create the conditions that will let your dreams defy gravity. You are meant to soar. If a 610,000 lb machine can fly, your dreams are not too big to get off the ground. I was fascinated the first time I saw this type of car wash in America. This was in early 2008 when I first came. I thought of starting something similar in Nigeria. I went to work, ran the numbers, called up vendors, suppliers, and franchisees. My research showed that I would need about a million dollars to start this in Lekki. I was able to secure an investor. The only problem was that they wanted me to physically be in Nigeria to manage it. That was how the idea died. I wasn’t going to leave my PhD unfinished to chase something so risky even though there was a chance it might take off big time. Alternative history is pure speculation. Each time I take my car for a wash, I still wonder what would have happened if I had returned to Nigeria in 2009 with a $1M investment to start this business. I guess we would never know. And, no, I’m not about to find out anymore.
