But many Ethiopians are asking: who actually benefits? Teachers and doctors have taken to the streets over low salaries and rising living costs. If everyday 9–5 workers can’t afford basic needs, how does a mega-project change their reality? With reported financing from the United Arab Emirates and construction led by firms from China, critics also raise concerns about foreign dependence and regional implications especially given tensions involving Sudan. When a government spends all its resources on propaganda, fixing streets, and building high-rises while the youth are left begging on the streets, there's a huge disconnect between the city's shiny skyline and the harsh reality. The discontinuation of USAID has left over 20 million Ethiopians vulnerable, worsening the already dire situation for many. With limited resources and no support, these people are left with little choice but to risk everything and leave their country in search of a better future, often heading to Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
