We should say it: candidacies like Graham Platner in Maine or Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan have not grown in spite of establishment targeting, but somewhat because of it. Base anger after 2024 is palpable. And some Democrats want not just an elected who will oppose Trump and Republicans, but one who will also change their own party from within. On Graham Platner: — The accumulation of scandals have turned this race from a contest about Susan Collins/Trump to a referendum on her challenger. Probably a worse place for Dems to be in an already tough race — Would urge caution on “he’s done” takes, pain tolerance in electorate for an outsider candidate is high — I don’t think moderates get an “I Told You So” in this race. If Platner is a bad candidate, only reinforces how DSCC/Janet Mills operation was even weaker With Erin Burnett on Erin Burnett OutFront

Most of our American political language for race and elections is still built from decades-old examples, like the 1960s civil rights era or the Chicano movement. But the country isn't living there anymore. Younger voters are increasingly immigrants, mixed-race kids, people who never fit either box. And the mismatch between how we talk about identity and it's realities is part of our misunderstanding of the electorate On Raging Moderates with Jessica Tarlov:

Voter resentment of Dems leftward turn was largely abt perceived focus on cultural issues. So to blanketly apply that to Sanders/Mamdani ignores the class forward nature of their message. The DSA “left” didn’t drive the Dems embrace identity politics wokeness etc. It was really the establishment class, where things like DEI and representation began to displace policies with tangible impact. That’s what electorate resented On CNN Elex Night coverage with Abby D. Phillip

There is clearly a coordinated Vance 2028 effort (Rubio’s statements, Erika Kirk endorsement) but he deserves some of the same skepticism that once faced Harris. He has three more years of publicly defending an unpopular president, who’s trending downward. He’s lost his outsider credentials. Also MAGA may not do what they’re told! A famously rowdy bunch On CNN Inside Politics w/ Manu Raju

Bothers me when Politics World uses the rising number of political independents as a justification for more Joe Manchins. “Independent” isn’t the same as the midpoint on a left/right spectrum, and most voters don’t neatly define themselves by ideology anyway On CNN Erin Burnett OutFront with Erin Burnett and Paul Rieckhoff🇺🇸🇺🇦

Doesn't take a DNC autopsy to know Biden's support of Israel's violent Gaza campaign impacted their standing with voters. We heard about it across the country, including a couple weeks before the election, when I canvassed with Harris volunteers in NC and met a lifelong Democrat who planned to sit out for the first time. Here's the benefit of doing the type of reporting that hears people's voices directly. It doesn't take a BLS revision to know job numbers aren't reaching the ground. To know wages haven't kept up with costs. Bidenomics didn't flop because it was bad messaging. It flopped because it wasn't true. On Majority Report with Emma Vigeland and Sam Seder

The median Democrat has "radicalized." Not in terms of moderate or progressive, per say, but they increasingly want elected officials who do and not talk -- and aren't afraid to demand party leadership use the levers of power at their disposal. Take Mikie Sherrill declaring a utility emergency. Or California and Virginia playing hardball on redistricting. On Majority Report with Emma Vigeland and Sam Seder

Democrats “original sin” was a belief that Donald Trump would be inherently unelectable bc of Jan. 6 and legal problems — which took root among party leaders after the midterm elections and gave them cover for unwisely consolidating behind Biden On CNN w/ Anderson Cooper

Data centers are a "kitchen table" issue in New Jersey, says Democratic candidate Bayly Winder for Congress. In the state's poorest county, electricity costs have risen alongside a new data center, angering residents in the process. And the lack of information about the project and its process has only inflamed concerns
