Beyond the clouds is a fascinating world. What you see here is a picture of a red sprite over a thunder cloud that I took as part of the Thor-Davis experiment from DTU Space ⚡Red sprites are part of the rare phenomena known as Transient Luminous Events, often shortened TLEs, that can appear over thunder clouds. The red sprites form around 40 to 80 km above ground and as you can see in the video from the Davis camera, the red sprites appear after the thunder has struck and much higher up. The Davis camera is special in that it does not take a picture like a regular camera, but like the retina in our eyes that is sensitive to changes in light, allowing it to take up to the equivalent of 100.000 pictures per second. This brings back memories of the blue jet I caught on camera on my first mission in 2015.

Today is World Science Day! The International Space Station is first and foremost a laboratory, where science is the main focus every day. We work with biology, human physiology, physics, material science and much more through out our missions. The microgravity environment of the Space Station is unique and provides a place to try new technologies and push science forward. Recently I had to perform maintenance on the Oxygen Generation Assembly (OGA) which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, a vital part of the life support systems on the Space Station. We recycle around 95% of all the water on the ISS, from the sweat and humidity in the air to the urine from our morning coffee. Tomorrow is the planned arrival of a new cargo vehicle, CRS-29, with new experiments and technology demonstrations. One of those experiments coming up is from Danish Aerospace Company, called VR for Exercise, where I will exercise on the new FERGO bike with a virtual reality headset on, allowing me to bike routes on Earth and will investigate if this immersive headset can support our exercise motivation. #Huginn #spacescience #WorldScienceDay #SpaceForEarth

Learning to fly is much easier this time, but it’s still an obstacle course to get through most of the modules of the space station because of all the equipment and cables that are everywhere 🧑‍🚀

On the weekends, we have time off and and while I like to call my friends and family or sit in the Cupola and take pictures of Earth, I sometimes like to play around a bit. I recorded this video a few weeks ago and finally got around to sharing it with you. The way a liquid, in this case orange juice, moves around on the Space Station is fascinating, rippling when I blow on it and how sticks to me as I drink it. #Huginn #OrangeJuice #Playtime

In one of my final sessions with the Thor-Davis experiment I captured this giant lightning strike that appears to strike between clouds - something that is more common than lightining striking Earth. I had it slowed down a few times so you can really see the scale of it. The "stars" you see in the video are dead pixels in the camera. Throughout my mission I have have the oppotunity to sit in the Cupola, both for science with the two Thor-Davis and EarthShine experiments thanks to DTU and DMI and in my spare time. It is a marvelous view I have from up here and I have tried to give a taste of it through these posts. #Huginn #Lightning #ThorDavis #DTU

It’s been a month now since I left the International International Space Station. One of the very last things that I did on undock day, was film a tour of the Space Station. It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you. Whenever I will miss my time onboard ISS, and especially my crewmates, I will have this video to look at. #Huginn #OneForTheMemories #TourOfTheSpaceStation #TourGuide
